Out of District Coursework Considerations

Overview of Appendix C, out of district credits

Lake Washington School District guidance around the Appendix C process for students requesting opportunities to earn high school credit through Out of District (OOD) coursework.

As your partners in education, we want to support you in evaluating options for your student, including outside online coursework. Below are some important considerations to keep in mind when making this decision.

Important information for students & families:

  • Families are responsible for buying books, materials or lab supplies needed for the course.
  • Once approved, students must complete the course in the term they selected.
  • Grade improvement: If a student takes a course again to improve their grade, all grades will still be listed on the transcript, but only the highest grade will be used in GPA calculations.
  • College & NCAA eligibility: Students must check if the course meets NCAA and college entrance requirements.
  • Transcripts: After finishing the course, students must submit an official transcript. Students in the class of 2025 and 2026 will align with the former policy and procedures regarding letter grade transcription. Students in the class of 2027 and beyond will follow the updated policy and procedures, and any initial courses taken outside of the district will earn a “P” and credit earned. Please note that students may submit their OOD transcripts separately as part of college applications or other post-high school plans.

After completing the out of district course

A sealed, official transcript must be sent to high school before any potential schedule changes are made or grade/credit is added to transcript

Every high school accepts transcripts any time, but there’s a deadline to receive summer transcripts for course changes (typically around August 20)

Official vs. unofficial transcript

  • Official
    • Directly from provider, untouched by family/student (sealed)
    • Family orders transcript from provider; small fee (around $10)
    • Online providers have instructions – not managed by LWSD staff
  • Unofficial
    • Provided/forwarded by family/student, compromised

Key considerations for enrolling in an outside online course

Definitions

  • Out of district credit (OOD): Courses taken outside of the LWSD system in an accredited educational program.
  • Grade improvement: Student passed a course but takes it again to improve the passing grade.
  • Initial credit: Student enrolls in OOD course taken for the first time.
  • Credit recovery: Student did not pass/earn credit in the first time they took the course.
