For the fifth year in a row, the College Board named Lake Washington School District (LWSD) to its Annual AP District Honor Roll. LWSD is one of only 373 public school districts in the United States and Canada and one of four in Washington state to be honored. Lake Washington is one of two districts in the state to be a multi-year recipient of the AP Honor Roll Award.

At its December 3 meeting, Lake Washington School District’s (LWSD) Board of Directors passed Resolution No. 2259 to place a Capital Projects Levy on the April 23, 2019 ballot. This measure, if passed, authorizes a six-year levy totaling $120 million or an average of $20 million per year for six years.

    Kindergarten Registration

ATTENTION: New student registration is completed at your neighborhood school. Please see below for the forms and information to bring with you to registration. If you have questions, please call your neighborhood school.

To start kindergarten in September 2019, your child must be five years old on or before August 31, 2019.

    Kindergarten Registration 2019-20:
Kindergarten Registration begins on Thursday, February 7, 2019 from 1-7 p.m. at all neighborhood schools.

To register your child, please bring the following items to your neighborhood elementary school:
    • Proof of child's birth date, such as a birth certificate or passport
    • Child's health history, including current immunization
    • Emergency contact information
    • Proof of residency (such as an energy bill with your current address, lease agreement, or mortgage statement)

Your elementary school will provide the necessary kindergarten registration forms to complete.

    Steps to register

    1. Determine your neighborhood school

Students must register at their "home" or neighborhood school, according to the attendance boundaries. Go to the school and bus finder for information on what your “home” schools are, including elementary, middle school and high school, based on your address. If you need assistance determining which school your student will attend, please contact the Lake Washington School District transportation department at 425-936-1120.

    2. Documents to bring

Schools require the following to register:

    • Proof of child's birth date, such as a birth certificate or passport
    • Proof of residency (such as an energy bill with your current address, lease agreement, or mortgage statement)
    • Records of Immunizations — students must meet state immunization requirements. Bring proof of immunization from your family physician or a local health department. The parent or guardian then transfers this information to a certificate of immunization and signs the certificate to verify its accuracy.
    • Emergency card — the parent or guardian fills out this form during registration. Bring information such as the student's birth date, address and home phone, mother and father's employer and work phone numbers, name and phone number of emergency contacts other than parent/guardian (ideally this person or people will live near the student), student's doctor's name and phone number, names of any medications student takes and any medical condition student may have.
    • Consent for Exchange of Information (if applicable) — If a student is transferring from another school, the parent or guardian must give their consent to transfer records from the student's previous school. It is helpful if the parent brings the name, address and phone number of the previous school.
    • Transcript or Academic History (if applicable) — Students transferring from another school should bring academic records. The school may also ask if the student has been in any special programs in their previous school such as English Language Learner, special reading program, etc.

Schools enroll students based on age. For example, according to Washington State's uniform entry age, a child must be six years of age as of midnight, August 31, of the year of entry to be entitled to enter first grade.

Some schools may have additional registration requirements. For further information, call the school directly. Some schools, particularly high schools, require that parents or students phone ahead for an appointment to register.

    3. Additional information for families

LWSD offers free all-day Kindergarten for all students
All Kindergarten classes are all day classes. The state of Washington requires that school districts provide the option of kindergarten part-day attendance. Parents/guardians interested in part-day attendance for their child should contact their principal. Mid-day transportation will not be available.

Children younger than five may qualify to enter kindergarten early
Some students do not meet the state age guidelines for kindergarten but they may still be highly capable and ready for school. The Kindergarten Early Entrance process uses a formal and informal assessment to determine if your child meets or exceeds specific criteria in the areas of mental ability, gross motor skills, fine motor skills, auditory discrimination, visual discrimination, and emotional/social development. Parents who are interested in this option for their child should follow the instructions for early kindergarten entrance.

Emerson K-12: a program that partners with families to provide instruction to students
Emerson K-12 is a parent partnership program that partners with families to educate children under the auspices and with the support of the LWSD. Emerson K-12 values and monitors learning that happens both at school and at home. Kindergarten students are on site at least 2.5 hours a week for supervised instruction and complete additional hours of instruction at home. For more information, please visit the Emerson K-12 website or call 425-936-2311.

    Discovery Community School
Discovery Community School (DCS), an elementary choice school, also offers a Kindergarten option. Entrance into DCS is by lottery and district bus transportation to choice schools is not provided. Parents interested in DCS must register for Kindergarten at their home school in addition to applying for entrance into DCS through the choice school lottery process. Information on this process can be found here.
