Choice Transfers

Public school students in Washington state may request a transfer from their “resident” district, where they live, to attend school in another public school district, where they do not reside. This is known as a Choice Transfer.

How to transfer out of Lake Washington School District

We are sorry to see you go but understand that sometimes individual students need specific programs this district does not offer. To attend school in another public school district, you must apply for a transfer.

How to transfer into Lake Washington School District

The District annually evaluates which schools shall be open and the number of spaces for non-resident student applications for the following school year. These transfers are approved on a space available basis, after transfers within the district have been accommodated. Schools will be designated as “Open” or “Closed” to choice transfer applications based upon space available (determined by enrollment capacity which includes enrollment projections and staffing projections) prior to the Open Enrollment period. The Open Schools list will be posted annually on the district website.

  • An “Open” school designation means that the school is not at enrollment capacity and that it is therefore able to accept students from outside it’s designated geographic attendance areas.
  • Even though a school may be designated as “Open”, there may be a grade levels within the school that are at enrollment capacity and unable to accept students from outside the school’s designated geographic attendance area.
  • A “Closed” designation means the school is at enrollment capacity and unable to accept students from outside the school designated for the geographic attendance area.
  • A “Limited” designation means the school is closed to Choice Transfers and has limited capacity for in-district variances.
  • Requests made to “Limited” or “Closed” schools will be automatically denied.

See Policy 3141 and Policy 3141P for additional information.

Inter-District Agreements

Inter-district Agreements are different than Choice Transfers. An Inter-district Agreement application/form is required when a student is requesting shared enrollment between LWSD and another WA State public school district with whom we have an established agreement.
