Our goal is to provide excellent nutrition for your child at prices you can afford. The table below shows prices:

Adding money to a lunch account

There are several ways to add money to a student’s lunch account:

Charge your Visa or MasterCard online through the secure MySchoolBucks.com site. If you would like step by step instructions for using this secure site, see our online payments page. There is a convenience fee of $3.25 for each transaction.
Families who utilize MySchoolBucks to manage their child’s account can set alerts that will notify and/or replenish when an account balance reaches a certain point. This is managed strictly by the parent.
For elementary students, send cash or a check made payable to LWSD Nutrition Services to the school office with your child’s name attached and labeled “school lunch”.
For Middle or High School students, give cash or check made payable to LWSD Nutrition Services to a cafeteria cashier.

Accounts with negative balances

Families will receive an automated email, text or phone call from ParentSquare and/or Mosaic (donotreply@nutrition.lwsd.org) once per week (Fridays) regarding their child’s meal account balance. Notifications will continue until account balance is paid off.
If the child’s account balance continues to remain negative after these attempts, Nutrition Services will contact the school designee who will connect with the families to problem solve ways to resolve the negative balance issue.
Unresolved negative balances at the end of the year will be submitted to the Accounting office for collection.

In addition to MySchoolBucks.com, overdue balances can be paid by check made payable to LWSD with your student's name, school and "Lunch" written on the check memo line. This can be taken to your school office, cashier or mailed to the Nutrition Services office at LWSD Nutrition Services, 15130 NE 95th St., Redmond WA 98052.

Additional benefits for families eligible for free or reduced-price meals:

Families that are eligible for free and reduced meals may also qualify to have fees for ASB cards, sports participation and other extracurricular activities waived by providing your consent to share eligibility information on the application. If you have already completed an application or are directly certified, please complete the Consent to Share Eligibility form (Spanish | Portuguese) and email it to F-RMealapp@lwsd.org.

Note: Families that qualify for Basic Food/SNAP (formerly known as food stamps), TANF, FDPIR, Foster Care, Homeless, or Migrant through DSHS are automatically enrolled in the free lunch program as “Directly Certified.” Families that are Directly Certified do not need to complete a Free & Reduced meal application to be eligible for Free & Reduced meals. However, if you are Directly Certified, you must still “consent to share” your eligibility status in order to have fees waived for extracurricular activities including ASB fees/cards and sports participation fees. To do this, please complete the Consent to Share Eligibility form and email it to F-RMealapp@lwsd.org.

Special Diets

Special Dietary Requests

If your child has a medical dietary need that requires food to be different or modified, you may request accommodations from the Nutrition Services Department by completing the appropriate Special Dietary Accommodations form.

Special Dietary Accommodations Form

The form must be completed in its entirety and signed by a state-recognized medical authority who is authorized to write medical prescriptions in the state of Washington. Completed forms must be submitted to the Nutrition Services office at 15130 N.E. 95th St., Redmond 98052. Please do not submit this form to the school nurse or the district office. Doing so will delay the processing of your request.

Allergies

Each school handles allergies in a different way, depending on their students' needs. If your child has a severe allergy, it is important to communicate your concerns directly with the school.

Nutrition Services uses food products that contain common allergens such as wheat, soy, egg, dairy and fish. These items are not specified on the menu due to product variations. If you have questions about allergens on specific menu items, contact the Nutrition Services office at (425) 936-1393. We are more than happy to work with you to accommodate allergy concerns.

We do offer peanut butter and jelly sandwiches at some sites. Select elementary and high school sites have chosen not to serve those sandwiches in their kitchens to decrease risk of anaphylactic reactions in affected students. Please be aware that this does not guarantee an allergen-free or nut-free school. All elementary sites receive their supplies and food products from middle school base kitchens that do have peanut butter on site. Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches served at the elementary schools are actually made at the middle school sites. They are sent, wrapped in cellophane, to the elementary schools.

Elementary school kitchens should not have peanut butter on site. We do our very best to avoid any cross contamination of peanut butter with any other food products in the middle school kitchen by preparing them last in a separate area of the kitchen and cleaning and sanitizing all utensils and surface areas affected immediately after production.

Keep in mind there are no restrictions on the products other students can bring in their lunches from home. Check with your school for local practices regarding allergens such as the use of nut-free tables in the lunch room.

Please be advised that our menu items may contain allergens or may have come in contact with items containing allergens. In addition, food manufacturers may change their formulation or manner of processing without our knowledge. Sodexo therefore cannot guarantee the accuracy of nutrition information. Ingredient and nutrition content of foods may vary due to changes in product formulation, recipe substitutions, portion size and other factors. The nutrition analyses provided are approximations only. Sodexo assumes no liability for any adverse reactions that may occur in the school cafeteria. We encourage all food allergic individuals to first inform the school nurse of allergy/intolerance and then work with our staff to plan a menu.

Meatless Options

Some of the items on the LWSD menu can be made without meat. For our purposes, a dish is considered meatless if it contains no animal meat, other than fish. Meatless options on our menu may include eggs, dairy and fish. Meatless options are identified with a (v) on all daily offerings. Please see the actual menu for more detail. We have at least one meatless option available every day.

Additionally, some main entree items do not contain meat such as a grilled cheese sandwich. Standard practice and accommodations vary from site to site, however the published menu will denote a vegetarian item with a (v) for ease of identification. The Lake Washington School District uses some pork ingredients in the school lunch menu. We hope this information will help you feel confident in finding and helping your child avoid those items on the menu throughout the year.

Please note: Turkey ham (which is 100% turkey) is used on all menu items that list ham.

Meal Charge Procedure

Lake Washington School District Meal Charge Procedure

LWSD’s Nutrition Services Department takes pride in providing nutritious meals to students to support learning each school day. It is the responsibility of parents or guardians to prepay for school meals, provide a meal from home, or complete an annual application establishing eligibility for free or reduced meal benefits.

Under no circumstance do we want a child to go without a meal during the school day. Students will be allowed to debit their school meal account for the purchase of a complete breakfast or lunch when their account shows insufficient funds or when the student does not have sufficient funds in the form of cash or a check. The purchase of a la carte items including second entrees, milk or juice and snacks are strictly prohibited when an account is negative or will become negative due to the charge.

Adults are not allowed to charge a meal or purchase any a la carte items if they have a negative balance on their account or will become negative due to the charge.

Nutrition Services will make every effort to communicate with families the status of their student’s low and negative meal account balances through the following efforts:

Accounts with low balances of $10 or less

Families will receive an automated email message once per week regarding their child’s meal account balance.
Families who utilize MySchoolBucks to manage their child’s account can set alerts that will notify you when an account balance reaches a certain point. This is managed strictly by the parent.

Accounts with negative balances

Families will receive an automated email, text or phone call from ParentSquare once per week (Fridays) regarding their child’s meal account balance. Notifications will continue until account balance is paid off.
If the child’s account balance continues to remain negative after these attempts, Nutrition Services will contact the school designee who will connect with the families to problem solve ways to resolve the negative balance issue.
Unresolved negative balances at the end of the year will be submitted to the Accounting office for collection.

We strongly encourage families to complete the school meal benefit application annually to determine if they qualify for free or reduced meal benefits. The school meal benefitapplication may be completed throughout the school year if a family’s income changes. Applications are available online (preferred method) through Myschoolapps, or by manually filling out an application found on the district website and emailing to F-RMealapp@lwsd.org.

Families are encouraged to enroll in the online prepayment service MySchoolBucks for meal account payments and account tracking. There is a convenience fee for this payment service; however, there is no fee associated with account balance inquires through MySchoolBucks.

If you do not want your child to purchase a meal once their account is negative or if you want to restrict the purchase of a la carte foods, an alert can be placed on their student’s account

Wellness

Students who have nutritious food and appropriate physical activity are better prepared to learn. While student health and well-being is a shared responsibility between schools and families, the school environment must be conducive to and promote learning.

Through input from students, parents, and staff, The Lake Washington School District has established a Nutrition, Health and Physical Fitness (Wellness) Policy that includes goals for nutrition education, physical activity and other school based activities. Also included are nutrition guidelines for all foods sold and available on campus during the school day with the objective of promoting student health and wellness.

The district completes a triennial assessment of our Wellness Policy to determine if our policy meets all the requirements set forth by the USDA as well as measure how we are doing in practice when it comes to meeting our wellness goals. How can families help their children and teens eat healthy at school?

Try new foods at home. Kids need many opportunities to taste a new food to "get used to it."
Eat lunch at school with your child. Learn more about what’s offered and meet school nutrition staff.
Encourage your child or teen to join in taste-testing events or surveys about school lunch, when available.
Talk with your child about what's on the menu. Make sure they know about all the foods that are available with their school lunch.

Kids need at least 60 minutes of physical activity each day.

Make family time active time!

Take a family walk after dinner.
Go on a bike ride.
Play together — toss a ball, shoot some hoops, jump rope, play tag.
Weed the garden, rake leaves, shovel snow.
Walk to school with your kids.
Play on a playground or hike at a local park.

Fun ways to get moving indoors...

Play some music and have a family dance party.
Blow up balloons and play indoor volleyball.
Go bowling or indoor skating.
Have a treasure hunt. See how fast everyone can find clues scattered around your home.

Sip Smarter

Drink water instead of sugary drinks. Kids can fill up on sweetened drinks and not have an appetite for foods they need for growth and health.
A cold glass of low-fat (1%) milk is also a tasty way to quench your kids’ thirst after play or school.

What is the free or reduced meal program?

How do you apply for this free and reduced meal program?

If you want to apply to see if you qualify for free meals, you can fill out and application electronically by going to the following website: https://www.myschoolapps.com/

You can also ask the school for a paper copy of the form, or download it from the website. You must complete it and return it to the school or scan and email to: F-RMealapp@lwsd.org. This application must be renewed every school year even if your student has qualified for this benefit the previous year.

Applications can be submitted at any time during the school year. Households experiencing a change in income due to job loss or other circumstances are encouraged to apply.

Eligibility lasts from the date of approval until the first 30 operational days of the next school year or until the family contacts the school. Unfortunately, the approval of free meals is not retroactive.

What is a "reimbursable meal"?

What meal components must a student take for lunch in order for a meal to be reimbursable?

All of our meals are planned to comply with the USDA standards. These standards include offering the following five meal components daily (In specific amounts depending on age group):

Fruit
Vegetable
Grain
Fluid milk

Students MUST take three out of the five components offered, with the only mandatory component being a ½ cup of fruit or vegetable.

What are commodity foods and how are they incorporated into the School Meal Program?

The USDA commodity food program supports domestic nutrition programs and American agricultural producers through purchases of 100% American grown and produced foods for use by schools participating in the National School Lunch Program. Foods such as proteins, fruits, vegetables, poultry, eggs, nuts, grains and cheese are provided by the USDA as "commodity" foods for use in our program.

Every meal we serve to kids - whether or not those kids are eligible for free meals - is subsidized through USDA's school meals program and commodity food distribution program. Meals that we serve to adults are not eligible for any of these subsidies. So, while kids actually pay less for the meals than it costs us to prepare and serve them, adults pay the full amount of our cost per meal.
