FOR311/FOR312 - Japanese 1
2 Semesters 1 Credit Fulfills: World Language

Designed for beginning learners with limited or no prior experience with the language. This course is taught using a communicative approach and emphasizes communication about everyday topics. Students begin to develop Novice proficiency, communicating in Japanese through interpersonal speaking and writing, presentational speaking and writing, and interpretive reading and listening. Students learn to introduce themselves and communicate through basic conversations about their interests, daily routine, and family and friends. This class is conducted in Japanese as much as possible and an emphasis is placed on becoming a competent communicator. Students will be introduced to the three sets of Japanese characters: hiragana, katakana, and kanji. Students expand their understanding of Japanese-speaking cultures in our community and other countries.

Japanese 1 is not recommended for Heritage or Native speakers of Japanese. If you speak Japanese at home, have lived in Japan, and/or have attended Japanese Saturday school, please contact your school's Japanese teacher to determine appropriate placement.
