Student Services

International Community School counselor working with student

Student Services is dedicated to promoting healthy social, emotional, and behavioral well-being skills within students. Schools who promote social-emotional development skills have shown to increase students’ sense of connection to school, positive behavior, and academic achievement (Durlak et al., 2011).

North Star

Equity is the condition that would be achieved if one’s identity no longer predicted, in a statistical sense, how one fares. When we use the term, we are thinking about equity as one part of justice, and thus we also include work to address root causes of inequality not just their manifestation. This includes elimination of policies, practices, attitudes, and cultural messages that reinforce differential outcomes by identity or fail to eliminate them.

Mission & Vision

Our mission is to ensure each staff, student and family in the Lake Washington School District feel:

  1. They matter to our community. We take pride in knowing each student's name, strength, need and aspiration.
  2. They belong to our community. Our schools thrive when each student can contribute in a meaningful way.
  3. They are safe within our community. Staff and students take responsibility in nurturing both physical and psychological for others and themselves.

Our purpose is to guide the successful implementation of evidence-based frameworks and practices that cultivate well-being skills. We support:

  1. A culturally sustaining continuum of care model that honors and acknowledge students come from a diverse ray of life experiences, culturally-rich heritages and social-emotional needs.
  2. Positive relationship practices that cultivate trust and care between the adults and students, staff-staff and staff-community throughout the building.
  3. Opportunities to elevate student agency and pro-social behaviors across school, community, and family settings.
  4. Frequent opportunities for students to learn, practice and receive explicit instruction around social, emotional and behavioral skills.
