LWSD Special Services acronyms and terms

  • BHS - Behavioral Health Specialist, a licensed therapist that provides counseling services for students served in IC programs
  • CAST - Organization focused on busting the barriers to learning that millions of people experience every day. They do this by helping educators and organizations apply insights from the learning sciences and leading-edge practices to educational design and implementation. CAST has partnered with LWSD on designing instruction for teachers on UDL (Universal Design for Learning).
  • Haring Center - The University of Washington Haring Center for Inclusive Education conducts leading-edge research to advance inclusive learning, and trains education professionals in proven practices to develop every child’s potential.
  • NPA - Non-Public Agency, private school that supports students in special education with more significant learning needs
  • IC - Intervention Center, supports students with significant mental health and/or behavior concerns
  • MTSS Coach – Multi-tiered System of Supports coach, an educator on special assignment who provides coaching for staff
  • MTSS Guidance Team - The team in schools that consider referrals for special education assessment
  • MTSS Intervention Team - The team in schools that provides intervention strategies and problem solves around a variety of student needs
  • ORSH - Old Redmond School House, early learning center
  • PS - Program Specialist, a special educator on special assignment who provides coaching and support for district staff
  • RISE - Reflect on Inclusive System, from the TIES Center
  • RR - Resource Room, a program that provides support to students with disabilities at the secondary level
  • SNAPS - Students Needing Additional Programming Support, a preschool program that provides an extended day of learning for students on the autism spectrum

  • TIES - Part of the University of Minnesota that works with states and districts to support the movement of students with disabilities from less inclusive to more inclusive environments.
