As graduation season approaches each spring, families and schools prepare for a milestone moment in every student’s educational journey. At Redmond High School, a parent‑led effort is offering seniors a new option, one that supports both students and the environment.

The Gowns Going Green initiative began as parents of the Class of 2025 learned that seniors traditionally purchased a brand-new graduation gown each year, despite the gown’s short period of use. Recognizing an opportunity to reduce waste and support students, the Redmond High School PTSA developed a system to collect, clean and redistribute gently used gowns for future graduating classes.

EcoBeyond initative student

EcoBeyond is a student-led sustainability initiative focused on increasing the availability of recycling opportunities for commonly discarded school supplies such as pens, markers and crayons. Led by Aarav Gumber, a junior at Tesla STEM High School, EcoBeyond empowers students to act against plastic waste in the form of school supplies through recycling drives.

Muir elementary student at Outdoor Learning Lab event

On October 7, Muir Elementary School was transformed into a vibrant hub of hands-on learning as volunteers came together to build a new Outdoor Learning Lab. This inspiring initiative was made possible through a partnership between the Seattle Seahawks, Monolithic Power Systems and OutTeach, a national nonprofit dedicated to turning outdoor spaces into dynamic learning environments.

KiMS students learning about stormwater pollution from City of Kirkland employee

The City of Kirkland and Rainworks teamed up with Muir Elementary and Kirkland Middle School to help spread the word about pollutants found in stormwater runoff. To highlight the impact of stormwater pollution, the city’s Storm & Surface Water Division installed temporary, eco-friendly art on both campuses.

LWSD Level One School District

Lake Washington School District (LWSD) has been working with the King County Green Schools (KCGS) program to bring awareness about sustainability to our community. That work paid off as the program has recognized LWSD for achieving Level One District recognition this year.
