Celebrating CTE Month: Preparing every student for real-world success

Celebrating CTE Month: Preparing every student for real-world success
CTE Month

February is Career & Technical Education (CTE) Month, a time to recognize the hands-on‑, future-focused learning experiences that help students across Lake Washington School District discover their interests, build practical skills and prepare for life beyond high school.

CTE programs bridge academic learning with real world applications. Whether students are exploring a new field or deepening skills in a career pathway, CTE provides meaningful experiences that build confidence and open doors to future opportunities.

What makes CTE unique?
CTE stands out because it blends classroom instruction with practical, skill-building experiences. Students engage in:

  • Industry aligned coursework using current tools, technologies and practices
  • Hands-on projects that mirror real workplace tasks
  • Collaboration and problem solving that strengthen communication and leadership
  • Flexible pathways that allow students to explore interests or prepare for a career field

By combining academics with application, CTE helps students understand the relevance of what they are learning and how it connects to their futures.

Connecting learning to life: Real-world exposure
Across LWSD, CTE teachers bring industry experts into classrooms to help students imagine their futures. This past semester alone, students heard directly from Seattle Children’s Hospital clinicians, DigiPen animators and leaders from Microsoft and Costco. These conversations introduce students to real career journeys, emerging industry trends and the skills needed to succeed.

Authentic business and production environments
Students also step into workplace environments that mirror professional expectations. District programs give students opportunities to operate catering services, manage retail and sales operations, and run broadcast studios. These experiences help students practice customer service, teamwork, time management and technical skills.

Building skill and community through service
Students make meaningful impact beyond their CTE classrooms through service-learning projects such as:

  • Leading Science Olympiad camps for elementary students
  • Supporting Stop the Bleed safety trainings
  • Coordinating schoolwide food drives
  • Providing ASL peer tutoring

These experiences foster leadership and a sense of purpose and are representative of the many ways service learning is practiced in CTE programs throughout the district.

Stay tuned
We’ll feature program-specific spotlights from across LWSD, highlighting the creativity of our teachers, the dedication of our students and the impact of career-connected learning.
