Meeting the students where they are – Juanita High School counselor wins state award for going above and beyond
Juanita High School counselor Stefa Chow is being honored as the 2025 Washington School Counselor of the Year. The award is given out by the Washington School Counselor Association (WSCA). According to the WSCA, her peers and students, Chow has made a significant impact at Juanita High School; supporting students, staff and families with her dedication and innovative practices. The WSCA professional recognition committee was particularly impressed by her commitment to using data-informed practices and advocating for comprehensive school counseling programs across Lake Washington School District.
Chow has been pivotal in creating the Juanita Flex Academy and has served as a school counselor for all Multilingual Learner students at JHS. Based on needs assessment data, her efforts have led to an 11% increase in students' overall sense of belonging, from 71% to 81%, during the 2023-24 school year.
"In the end, everybody who knows Ms. Chow someday is so lucky,” said
JHS senior Isadora Domingues. “I am 100% sure that she is the start point for a changed life for a lot of teenagers. She tries her best, and for counseling, she is the best."
"Ms. Chow is definitely one of the many amazing women and counselors I will always remember, even after I leave,” said JHS senior Gabriela Oliveira. “And I’ll forever be grateful for the moments where she has helped me and given me advice that I’ll take with me on my journey in adulthood."
Chow’s dedication extends beyond her immediate school community. She actively seeks partnerships with local organizations to provide additional support and opportunities for her students. Her leadership was crucial in establishing the Juanita Learning Community Family Connection Center, which has significantly increased the rate of resources reaching families.
"Stefa is a tireless advocate for her students' well-being and equitable educational opportunities,” said JHS Associate Principal Terry Jess. “She works diligently to ensure that every student has access to the resources and support they need to succeed academically, socially and emotionally."
Chow will be recognized at the WSCA award luncheon at their annual conference on March 6 and will be considered for the American School Counselor Association School Counselor of the Year in 2026.
