State recognizes Sandburg/Discovery and LWSD with Green Schools awards

Our school district has 34 schools participating in the King County Green Schools program this year. But only one has reached Level 4/Sustaining Green School recognition. Carl Sandburg Elementary and Discovery Community School (Sandburg/DCS) have maintained their Sustaining Green School status for five years. On Earth Day, April 22, the Washington State Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) recognized Sandburg/DCS as a Washington State Green School Leader in Pillar III.

The three pillars of the award include: (1) Reducing environmental impact and costs; (2) Improving the health and wellness of schools, students, and staff; and (3) Providing effective environmental and sustainability education, incorporating STEM, civic skills, and green career pathways.

OSPI also awarded Lake Washington School District (LWSD) its Washington Green Ribbon School District recognition.
