Upcoming temporary closure of Community Pool at Juanita High School

Upcoming temporary closure of Community Pool at Juanita High School

The pool will be closed from March 1, 2025-August 31, 2025

Redmond, Wash. – The Community Pool at Juanita High School (JHS) will be closed from March 1, 2025 through August 31, 2025 to make critical capital improvements to extend the life of the pool. Wave Aquatics, the group that manages pool operations, will provide additional communication to families and community members who regularly use the pool regarding alternatives to swim lessons/lap swims.

The Fieldhouse and Community Pool at JHS have gone through a series of improvements and modernizations since 2021:

  • The fieldhouse and pool building were fully re-roofed, with associated structural repairs to framing, cladding, and glue-lam beams (2021 and 2022).
  • Upgraded HVAC equipment for core spaces (2023).
  • Renovated pool locker rooms, showers, restrooms and pool and fieldhouse stairs and rails to current accessibility standards (2024).

Work to be completed during pool closure from March 1, 2025 through August 31, 2025:

  • Full replacement and upgrade of pool pump, filtration, and circulating water systems and equipment.
  • Upgrade pool deck with anti-skid surfacing for safety and improved appearance.
  • Repair pool interior finishes and replace hard-to-read depth markers and other markings with high-contrast markings.
  • Replace and upgrade the natatorium ventilation and dehumidification system for improved air quality.

These projects have been funded by a combination of grant funds and capital levy funds. LWSD has developed a phased strategy to address the pool's needs and has received two grants from the King County voter-approved 2020-2025 Parks, Recreation, Trails and Open Space Levy. An initial $1.8 million grant was received in February 2022, and a second grant for $2 million was received in September 2023. Funds from 2018 and 2022 capital projects levies will also fund this project.

Thanks to the voter-approved 2024 Building Excellence Capital Construction Levy, future projects to modernize the Fieldhouse and Community Pool at JHS will also be completed. Additional improvements funded by the levy will be completed by 2028, including:

  • Upgrade boiler system and remaining air handling units
  • Modernize locker rooms & restrooms
  • Update windows, doors & railings
  • Upgrade fire/life/safety systems
  • Upgrade lighting & electrical systems
  • Modernize physical education and support spaces
  • Expand the front entrance for improved access
