LWSD announces calendar changes for 2024-25

LWSD announces calendar changes for 2024-25
Last day of school changes to Tuesday, June 24, 2025

Lake Washington School District (LWSD) has finalized plans to make up for days missed due to the widespread power outages in November and snow days in February. The 2024-25 calendar has been modified to reflect this change:

  • Friday, May 23, 2025: Originally a LEAP Day, now a half day of school.
  • Tuesday, May 27, 2025: Originally a snow make-up day, now a full day of school.
  • Wednesday, June 18, 2025: Originally scheduled as a half day, now a full day of school (not an early release Wednesday).
  • Thursday, June 19, 2025: No school: Juneteenth Holiday.
  • Friday, June 20, 2025: Now a full day of school.
  • Monday, June 23, 2025: Now a full day of school.
  • Tuesday, June 24, 2025: Half-day: Last day of school.

May 27 was built into the calendar as a snow make up day, meaning that if we had snow days this school year, we would make them up by changing this day from a non-student day to a regular school day.

These changes were made in consideration of students, families and staff. It should be noted that high school graduation dates and times will not be affected by these changes. Families with preschool students will receive a separate communication from our Director of Early Learning with an updated Preschool calendar.

Additional details:

This year, LWSD had to cancel school for five (5) days due to a combination of power outages and snow days. Additionally, we have had four 2-hour late starts, totaling an additional 8 lost instructional hours.

The school district may request a waiver for the required 180 school days for days missed due to power outages covered by Governor Inslee’s State of Emergency declaration. However, we cannot waive the annual instructional hours requirement of 1,027 hours across grades 1-12. This means that even if certain school days can be waived, the district must still meet the state’s annual requirement of 1,027 instructional hours.

In deciding whether to extend the school year, we considered both the need to meet instructional hour requirements and the need to make up for lost days. At the same time, we aimed to preserve the benefits of the existing calendar and minimize disruptions to planned activities for students and staff.
