Lake Washington School District receives grant funding for two additional zero-emission buses

Redmond, Wash. - On Wednesday, May 29, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced that Lake Washington School District (LWSD) will receive funding for two new electric buses. This now brings the total number of electric buses the district will be receiving to four after a similar announcement was made in January. The buses are being funded by the Clean School Bus Program Rebate. This program is designed to replace diesel buses with zero-emission buses.
 
LWSD is one of 16 school districts in Washington that will receive over $24 million to replace 111 older school buses with new electric or propane buses. The Program will help Washington accelerate the transition to zero-emission vehicles and replace older, diesel-fueled school buses, which have been linked to asthma and other conditions that harm the health of students and surrounding communities.
 
The 2023 Clean School Bus Rebate Program provides $500 million in combined funding to cover bus, workforce development costs and infrastructure costs for awardees requesting zero-emission school buses.
 
"We are incredibly proud of our team for continuing to find ways to help us fund projects like this in our district,” said Dr. Jon Holmen, Superintendent. “We are excited to bring zero-emission buses to our district. We have applied for multiple grants and received our first grant in January 2024. We are appreciative that we have now been selected for this award as well."
