Elementary Highly Capable Program Services
Updated for the 2025-26 school year
Classroom based services (CBS)
CBS services will start in the fall of the 2025-26 school year. These services are provided for all K-5 students who have advanced academic needs in one or more identified areas. CBS literacy, math or both identification qualifies the student for classroom differentiation, possible extensions and/or enrichment opportunities in the area/s of identification.
Who provides the service for CBS
The general education classroom teacher will make decisions on how to support the student within their classroom with their identified subject area need.
Where will CBS services be provided
Students identified for CBS remain in their general education classroom, at their neighborhood school site. Students identified for CBS will not be pulled out of their classroom or moved to a different site to receive services.
What will CBS services look like
The classroom teacher will decide how to extend and/or enrich the classroom learning experience for the student. This may include, but is not limited to:
- Small group instruction that extends or enriches the current grade level standard being taught in class.
- Use of extension/enrichment materials provided to all teachers from the Accelerated Programs department.
- Use of higher-level questioning techniques to engage the student in more complex thinking about topics being taught.
- Guided group discussions focused on interpretation and evaluation of topics.
- Independent research and projects aligned with curriculum goals.
- Access to beyond level text and lessons embedded in the core curriculum.
- Strategies for depth and complexity.
- Instructional strategies used in Universal Design for Learning principles.
Full-Time Quest (FTQ)
FTQ services are provided for students in grades 2-5 who have been identified with academic needs that go beyond the scope of a general education classroom. These students show both academic and cognitive needs that require advanced educational differentiation.
Who provides the service for FTQ
Specific teachers in LWSD provide services for FTQ students. These teachers receive specific professional development and resources to address the unique learning needs of these identified students.
Where will FTQ services be provided
Students identified for FTQ services will attend one of the elementary school sites in LWSD that provides FTQ services. FTQ services are provided in a self-contained classroom with other identified FTQ students. These classrooms may be single-grade-level classrooms or contain multiple grades in one room.
What will FTQ services look like
The FTQ teacher will have access to district provided curriculum tools for all subject areas. Math is taught to all students at one grade level above their current grade. Literacy in FTQ classrooms is taught using grade level standards. FTQ teachers have access to Junior Great Books literacy curriculum to help meet the needs of their students in reading. They will also employ strategies that extend and/or enrich the classroom learning experience for their students. This may include any/all strategies that teachers of CBS students employ, as well as:
- Project-based learning.
- Socratic seminars.
- Use of Beast Academy math materials.
- Use of Byrdseed.TV instructional materials.
- Specific gifted education pedagogical practices.
- Instructional strategies used in Universal Design for Learning principles.
