Identification Process FAQ

FAQ for 2025-26

This year’s Highly Capable (HiCap) identification process builds on last year’s foundational work by Accelerated Programs. The CogAT will now be administered only when the Multidisciplinary Placement Committee (MPC) determines more information is needed. This update creates a more aligned and equitable approach to identifying student needs and reduces unnecessary testing for students who may not require it, differing from previous years when most students were assessed regardless of need.

Why this is important

  • The MPC will first review academic data for all referred students and those in universal screening grades (2 and 5).
  • “Administered as needed” means some students may take only parts of the CogAT, others the full assessment, and some may not take it at all.
  • Students can still be identified for services without taking the CogAT.
  • For more information about identification and service pathways, visit Identification Assessments – Lake Washington School District.
