Identification Process FAQ
FAQ for 2025-26
This year’s Highly Capable (HiCap) identification process builds on last year’s foundational work by Accelerated Programs. The CogAT will now be administered only when the Multidisciplinary Placement Committee (MPC) determines more information is needed. This update creates a more aligned and equitable approach to identifying student needs and reduces unnecessary testing for students who may not require it, differing from previous years when most students were assessed regardless of need.
Why this is important
- The MPC will first review academic data for all referred students and those in universal screening grades (2 and 5).
- “Administered as needed” means some students may take only parts of the CogAT, others the full assessment, and some may not take it at all.
- Students can still be identified for services without taking the CogAT.
- For more information about identification and service pathways, visit Identification Assessments – Lake Washington School District.
- Why isn’t the CogAT being given to every student referred or in universal screening years?
- Are all students in universal screening grades taking the CogAT?
- Why aren’t families notified when additional testing is conducted for their child?
- Why can’t we know when the CogAT is being given?
- Why does it take so long to find out if my student will receive services?
- If my student does not take the CogAT, how can I be sure they are being considered fairly?
- Can families request that their student take the CogAT even if it is not required?
- When and how will families be notified about identification results?
