Preschool
Preschool programs offered in LWSD
The LWSD preschool programs provide children and families with an enriching, play-based first-school experience. Families with a 3- and/or 4-year-old child living within the boundaries of Lake Washington School District are eligible for the preschool program. Your child must be three or four years old by August 31, 2024 and live within the Lake Washington School District boundaries. (Students who are 5 years old on or before August 31, 2024 must register for Kindergarten.)
Each classroom utilizes the Creative Curriculum as our primary instructional curriculum. The Creative Curriculum is a play-based curriculum embedded within discovery-based studies and activities that cover all developmental areas and pre-academic skills. In every classroom play is valued, encouraged and intentionally provided through the use of this curriculum. We know that providing meaningful opportunities for play is such a valuable instructional tool for kids at this age. Through play, kids learn how to think creatively, and problem solve, how to persist through challenges, how to make and follow rules as well as how to get along with others. It’s these ‘soft skills’ that we focus on with our students to help prepare them for kindergarten and beyond as they are foundational for supporting students’ ability to learn more rigorous academic content.
Inclusion preschool
Our inclusion preschool program offers a comprehensive early childhood learning experience in preparation for kindergarten. Classes include typically developing children from the community as well as students receiving special education.
Head Start preschool
Head Start is a federally funded comprehensive early childhood program offering services for the entire family and focuses on school readiness. Families whose income meets the federal poverty guidelines qualify for the Head Start preschool program. The program is designed for children ages 3 and 4, with priority for enrollment given to 4-year-olds. Verification of income must be received before a family can be considered for placement in Head Start. A Family Support Specialist works with families to obtain all needed income documentation.
