The Kirkland Interactive Technology Experience brought in big bucks for Lake Washington schools. Redmond High School received a check for $10,000 as the big winner.
The district provides transportation only to those students living outside a one-mile radius, unless the district has reviewed walk routes and determined no safe walk route is available. Within that boundary, our practice allows for elementary students to walk up to one and a half miles to school and middle and high school students to walk up to two miles. Students with walk distances that exceed these limits are eligible for bus service. These guidelines are used to establish all walk boundaries for the Lake Washington School District.

If your student is eligible for transportation, you will receive a postcard in the mail each year, before school begins, listing the bus information for your student(s). This postcard contains the route number; bus stop location; and time of pick up and drop off. If you did not receive a postcard or would like to confirm the information, you can look it up online, by using the above links. Parents will be contacted by the driver with route information for special needs students and preschoolers.
Bus routes are posted here for a few weeks at the beginning of each school year. Because bus routes change slightly as the year goes on, please check the School & Bus Finder for current route information.
Walking and bicycling can be a great way to get to school. Students get exercise. Traffic around school may be reduced. And fewer cars can help the environment.
Before you start, it’s important to make sure the route your student(s) take to walk or bike to school are appropriate. The district’s Safety Advisory Committee asked a subcommittee to review suggested walk routes to the district’s elementary schools. That group worked with traffic and pedestrian safety experts as well as a GIS consultant to develop GIS maps of updated walk routes. Schools reviewed the maps and provided feedback. These maps are posted below.
The same group also worked on a policy concerning walking and riding bikes to school. This policy replaces individual school rules for when students can ride bikes to school. The policy includes bicycle riding guidelines consistent with Washington State School Walk and Bike Routes: A Guide for Planning and Improving Walk and Bike to School Options for Students. These guidelines take into account childhood development as it relates to pedestrian and bicycle skills.
