Substance Use

Students Report of Substance Use
On the 2016 Healthy Youth Survey, students in grades 6, 8 and 10 continued to report downward trends. They reported eight-year lows in current and lifetime substance use. Similarly, grade 12 students trended downward and reached eight-year lows in lifetime alcohol use, current binge drinking, lifetime marijuana use and current illegal drug use. Twelfth graders also reported a 4% decline in current prescription drug use.

There were slight increases from 2014 in current cigarette smoking, current alcohol use, current marijuana use and substance use at school for grade 12 students.

Grades 6 and 8 reported fewer students using e-cigarette or vaporizer than state average. Grades 10 and 12 reported slightly higher use of e-cigarettes or vaporizers than state average.

All grades reported fewer students using marijuana than state average.

Supports in Place at Schools
To continue to support students in making healthy choices when it comes to using drugs or alcohol, the District has a partnership with Youth Eastside Services. The partnership provides prevention/interventionists at each secondary school.

School Rules and Discipline
It is against school rules for students to possess, use, be under the influence of, transfer, sell or share drugs, alcohol, paraphernalia, cigarettes or vape-devices while on campus, on school transportation or at a school-sponsored activity.

Students found to have violated these rules may be referred to the prevention/interventionist for a risk assessment, in addition to receiving school discipline.
