Over the past week we have watched events unfold across our country that reflect the anger and outrage that has once again been sparked by a senseless and horrific death.

At the December meeting, the High School Math Adoption Committee narrowed the selection of materials to two programs for further review. In the coming months, teachers from each of our high schools, and select middle schools, will be piloting these materials in their classrooms Teachers who will be piloting will use content from lessons and units that match with what they will normally be teaching. During the pilot process, teachers will be gathering information about the usability of the materials. They will also be collecting feedback from students. In March and April, materials will be made available for parents and community members to review.

The High School Math Adoption Committee will be evaluating print and digital materials from a variety of publishers through December 1 for our Algebra 1, Geometry and Algebra 2 courses. The committee is scheduled to meet on December 16 to identify two math programs to pilot in classrooms.

These programs were selected based on alignment with our state standards, the availability of current (2013 or later) materials, and use and favorable reviews in neighboring districts. Piloting of materials in classrooms will begin in late January. A recommendation for 9-12 math materials is scheduled for the spring of 2017.

High school math teachers, administrators, parents, and community members met to finalize checklists (rubrics) that will be used to evaluate math materials.
Committee members will be using rubrics to determine how well these instructional materials address the following criteria:
Committee members will begin reviewing later in the month. The committee is scheduled to have a recommendation about the adoption of materials for the Instructional Materials Committee meeting on May 4, 2017. This will be followed by a recommendation to the Board on June 5, 2017.
