International Community School recognized nationally for new art and literary magazine

ICS REALM award for Pyra magazine

Lauren Jackson, humanities teacher at International Community School, had a thought last June. She had a hunch the school’s new art and literary magazine was special, so she submitted it for an award. Turns out, she was right. The National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) recently ranked the magazine, named “Pyra,” as “Excellent.” It was submitted through the NCTE program called Recognizing Excellence in Art and Literary Magazines, or REALM. The mission of NCTE’s REALM program is to publicly recognize excellent literary magazines produced by high school and middle school students with the support of their teachers. There is only one other magazine in Washington state recognized by the REALM program this year.

Michelle Janssen, Alex Boyko and Eric Shi were the magazine’s 2018-19 student editors. Learn more about the REALM program and to view other winners on the NCTE website
