King of KingCo and beyond – Juanita High School athletic director named best in class
Jason Thurston at Juanita High School has been named the Sea-King District 2 Athletic Director of the Year. Back in November, Thurston was crowned the KingCo Conference Athletic Director of the Year. This is especially significant since those who vote on that award are all the athletic directors, Thurston’s peers, from Juanita’s conference. It is notable because his colleagues have the most interaction and knowledge of the contributions Jason makes to his school, the school district and the league.
Being named to the KingCo award automatically placed Thurston on the ballot for the Sea-King District 2 award. District 2 is made up of four separate conferences serving more than 70 different schools in Seattle and the surrounding areas. The Sea-King Executive Board selected Thurston as the District 2 Athletic Director of the Year (ADOY) in early January. Thurston is being honored for the work he did in the 2023 calendar year.
By winning the District 2 ADOY, Thurston is now one of nine district winners from across the state on the ballot to be named State Athletic Director of the Year. The selection, banquet and ceremony will be held at the annual State Athletic Director Conference on Monday, April 29, in Kennewick, Wash. Lake Washington School District’s Director of Athletics, John Appelgate, will be the master of ceremonies for the state event in April.
