On a recent morning at Lake Washington High School, students in Michelle Coon’s Senior English class filed into the library to “interview” with local business members. These local business members scored students on everything from their communication skills and preparation to their appearance and handshake.

“This experience was stressful, but a good learning experience,” said student Phin Mallon.

In addition to interview practice and resume writing, students also write college applications, scholarship essays and cover letters as part of the class curriculum.

“I want to ensure their learning is authentic and makes them future-ready,” says Ms. Coon. “With the volunteers, 40 seniors were able to connect with community members and receive amazing feedback about their interview skills. I’m very appreciative to the volunteers for making this possible.”
