Brady Gockel, LWHS

Senior Brady Gockel, Lake Washington High School (LWHS), was awarded the Pacific Northwest Football Officials Association (PNFOA) 2018 Athlete Sportsmanship Award. Gockel was presented the award during an assembly at LWHS on June 14. PNFOA is a group that provides high school football officiating services. The award includes a $1,000 scholarship that Gockel can use towards any institution he attends after high school.

Earlier this year, LWHS’s football team was honored with a sportsmanship award by the PNFOA. As part of the recognition, the school was asked to nominate a team member who displayed exceptional sportsmanship throughout the season. The LWHS football coaches nominated Gockel.

“Brady consistently led the team in demonstrating excellent sportsmanship, regardless of the score of the game,” said Rick O’Leary, LWHS Athletic Director. “Brady’s positive example – in word and action – was a model for his teammates.”

Gockel had an impressive sports year. In addition to his achievements on the football field, he took second place in the javelin throw at the 3A state track and field meet. He was also honored as Athlete of the Week by the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) for his achievements in track and field. Also this year, Gockel broke LWHS’s school record in the javelin with a throw of 187 feet, eight inches (besting the previous record of 176-11).

Gockel will attend the University of Washington, where he plans to join the track and field team.
