Bang the drum: Activity teaches Native American students about their heritage

Native American student shows the intricate drum he madeDuring two after-school classes in January, the Eastside Native American Education Program (ENAEP) taught 69 students how to build and play drums. Lessons started with learning a traditional song. After the lesson, the Elder’s Council worked with families to carefully assemble the drums. The event gives students the chance to learn songs and traditions that have a meaningful connection to their ancestors.

The ENAEP is a federally-funded program that assists Native American students in the Lake Washington, Bellevue, and Northshore school districts in grades K-12. Services include programs to help students succeed academically, as well as to enrich their cultural lives.
