LWSD schools collect $41,500 in KITE STEM Challenge

The Kirkland Interactive Technology Experience (KITE) brought in big bucks for Lake Washington schools. Redmond High School received a check for $10,000 as the big winner during an awards ceremony on May 23. Fifteen different Lake Washington School District (LWSD) schools cashed in through the Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) competition.

About 3,000 students participated in the challenge by answering 300,000 STEM-related questions. Students earned entry points for their school by answering the questions through the KITE STEM app on their phones. The challenge encouraged students to spend more time outdoors during the three-week competition. Schools earned additional points if the questions were answered at a Kirkland park.

Google and the Kirkland Parks Foundation sponsored the event. The money for each of the schools will go towards an increase in STEM programming. Students could earn individual prizes, such as IMAX tickets and memberships to Pacific Science Center, for their participation.

“The KITE STEM Challenge was so great because it provided our students a wonderful STEM learning opportunity,” said LWSD Superintendent Dr. Traci Pierce. “[It] also encouraged them to spend time outside in one of the city’s beautiful parks.”
