Dear LWSD Staff and Families,

This is a brief update related to our Return to School Task Force efforts. As you may be aware, the District is continuing its efforts to provide kindergarten and then first grade families the option to select in-person learning. This is in alignment with the stated process to provide families options for in person learning in accordance with the Department of Health guidance and recommendations for K-12 schools.

We are in an unprecedented time and with that comes unique challenges that we as a community have not previously faced. The needs of each student and family are different and we recognize that there are a wide variety of opinions as to how best meet the needs of our youngest learners. As a District, we led with a set of goals for the Return to School Task Force work.

Goal #2: Keep staff and students safe and support social-emotional well-being and interactions.

Goal #4: Support families.

As we walk through these changes, we need to be mindful of the many areas of health, safety and well-being. Our staff will continue to work diligently in supporting our students social and emotional well-being. This includes tending to the unique needs of those going through transition and maintaining a sense of community throughout this school year.  We will be following our COVID-19 Safety Plan in order to tend to the safety and interactions of staff and students as we return to school.

I understand the challenges associated with moving forward and know we will do this best if we collectively support each other and those around us.

Kindergarten and First Grade Families

As a reminder, we are targeting Tuesday, September 29 for families to complete the survey in Skyward Family Access. For directions on how to complete the survey, you can find directions on the main page of the Return to School Task Force website. We have received a number of questions throughout the week and have updated the FAQ section of the Return to School Task Force website with this information.

Thank you,

Dr. Jon Holmen, Superintendent
Lake Washington School District
