January 7, 2021: Pathway Forward & video of live event
Dear LWSD Families,
During our Teams Live event on Wednesday, January 6, I announced that in-person services will begin on Thursday, February 4 for Kindergarten and first grade students, on Thursday, February 18 for second and third grade students, and on Thursday, February 25 for fourth and fifth grade students. Middle school and high school students will have in-person start dates in March. More details on the in-person model for secondary students will be released as they are developed.
I would like to apologize for anyone who experienced issues with viewing our live event via our website last night. We experienced a technical issue that did not allow the sound to be broadcast to our community through that tool. The Microsoft Teams Live event did broadcast live with sound.
Here is the re-opening timeline:
Elementary families can expect to receive a separate email with survey information to select either the in-person or fully remote option. We are asking families to complete the survey by 11:59 p.m. on Monday, January 11. Instructions for completing the survey are available here for grades K-1, and here for grades 2-5.
It is important to note that families should be prepared for their child’s teacher to change as a result of this shift to in-person. I mentioned this in last night’s announcement as well. We understand the importance of teacher-student relationships, but also know that it will be challenging to match every student with their teachers as we shift to our new model. Families should be prepared to help their children with this transition.
The option selected by families will be for the remainder of the 2020-21 school year.
Changes to Elementary Conferences:
I also announced changes to elementary conferences, scheduled for the end of this month. Kindergarten and first grade teachers will hold conferences with their current students on January 29, February 1, and February 2. Second through fifth grade teachers will hold conferences with their current students per the current LWSD calendar on January 26, 28 and 29.
Clarification on Vaccine Distribution & Prioritization:
As an additional follow up to my comments related to the distribution of the vaccine. I need to apologize for not articulating the update to the prioritized vaccination distribution better. I want to be clear that there are two categories for K-12 staff in the prioritization list:
- Category B2: The phase where K-12 staff that are age 50 and older are eligible for the vaccine
- Category B4: The phase where K-12 staff that are under the age of 50 are eligible for the vaccine.
