Lake Washington School District announces administrative changes for 2017-2018

Administrative changes include some new faces for LWSD

When schools open in September, there will be many new faces in Lake Washington School District, including new principals. Openings resulted from retirements or administrators accepting positions in other districts.

Principal changes for 2017-18:

Juanita High School:

  • Kelly Clapp, most recently principal at Redmond Middle School, will serve as principal at Juanita High School. Clapp replaces Gary Moed who retired in June.

Redmond Middle School:

  • Jon Young will serve as principal at Redmond Middle School. Young comes from Inglemoor High School in Northshore School District where he served as assistant principal for the past four years. Young replaces Kelly Clapp who is now principal at Juanita High School (see above).

International Community School/Community School:

  • Margaret Kinney, most recently an associate principal at Redmond High School, will serve as principal at International Community School/Community School. Kinney replaces Gregory Moncada who accepted a position overseas.

Redmond Elementary:

  • Kirsten Gometz, most recently principal at Rockwell Elementary, will serve as principal at Redmond Elementary. Gometz replaces Jennifer Jarta who left Lake Washington School District.

Rockwell Elementary:

  • Michael Clark, most recently an associate principal at Redmond Middle School, will serve as principal at Rockwell Elementary. Clark is replacing Kirsten Gometz, who will be principal at Redmond Elementary (see above).

Carson Elementary:

  • Scott Power, most recently associate principal at both Carson and Blackwell, will serve as principal at Carson Elementary. Power replaces Mary Cronin who retired in June.

Lakeview Elementary:

  • Heather Frazier, most recently principal at Sandburg Elementary/Discovery Community School, will serve as principal at Lakeview Elementary. Frazier replaces Steven Thatcher who is now with Issaquah School District.

Sandburg Elementary/Discovery Community School:

  • Lori Pierce has been selected as principal of Sandburg Elementary/Discovery Community School. Pierce comes from Snohomish School District. She replaces Heather Frazier, who is now principal at Lakeview Elementary (see above).

New Elementary School in North Redmond:

  • Karen Barker, principal at Dickinson Elementary/Explorer Community School, has been named planning principal for the new elementary school in North Redmond. She will continue to serve as principal at Dickinson/Explorer during the 2017-18 school year. The new elementary is slated to open in fall 2018.

New Elementary School in Redmond Ridge East:

  • Kim Bilanko, principal at Rosa Parks Elementary has been named planning principal for the new elementary school in Redmond Ridge East. She will continue to serve as principal at Rosa Parks Elementary during the 2017-18 school year. The new elementary is slated to open in fall 2018.

Associate Principal changes for 2017-18:

Eastlake High School: 

  • Darcie Breynaert will serve as an associate principal at Eastlake High School. Breynaert completed her administrative internship this past year. She has been at Eastlake since 2014, where she has served as College and Career Readiness Specialist. Breynaert replaces Scott Sartorius who is now with Vancouver Public Schools.

Juanita High School:

  • Joe Gorder will serve as an associate principal at Juanita High School. Gorder completed his administrative internship this past year. Joe has served as a Consulting Teacher (CT) for our New Teacher Support Program since 2007. Gorder replaces Gloria Heier, who retired in June.
  • Christine McMillan will serve as an associate principal at Juanita High School this year. McMillan completed her administrative internship this past year. McMillan comes from Redmond High School where she taught English for the past 15 years. She replaces Tim Hupperten who is now with Auburn School District.

Redmond High School:

  • Andrew Hosford will serve as an associate principal at Redmond High School. Andrew is from the Peninsula School District where he served as Dean of Students and Journalism and Business teacher. Hosford replaces Margaret Kinney who will be principal at International Community School/Community School (see above).

Redmond Middle School: 

  • Drew Williams will serve as an associate principal at Redmond Middle School. Williams comes from Moses Lake High School, where he completed his administrative internship this past year. Williams replaces Michael Clark, who will be principal at Rockwell Elementary next year (see above).

Blackwell Elementary/Carson Elementary:

  • Angela Morrison will serve as associate principal at Blackwell Elementary and Carson Elementary. Morrison comes to us from the Issaquah School District where she most recently served as Dean of Students at Pine Lake Middle School. Morrison replaces Scott Powers who is now principal at Carson Elementary (see above).

Dickinson Elementary/Explorer Community School:

  • Melissa Doering will serve as associate principal at Dickinson Elementary/Explorer Community School. Doering served as associate principal at Mann Elementary and Wilder Elementary. She replaces Jef Lingelbach who is now with the Monroe School District.

Rush Elementary/Rose Hill Middle School:

  • Leslie Kyle will serve as associate principal at both Rush Elementary and Rose Hill Middle School. Kyle completed her administrative internship this past year. At Rush, Kyle replaces Malia Goodfellow who is now full-time associate principal at Mark Twain Elementary.

Mann Elementary/Wilder Elementary:

  • Charles Jamieson will serve as associate principal at both Mann Elementary and Wilder Elementary. Jamieson comes from Highline Public Schools, where he completed his administrative internship this past spring. Jamieson replaces Melissa Doering who moved to Dickinson Elementary and Explorer Community School (see above).

Central office changes for 2017-18:

  • Dr. Jon Holmen has been named Deputy Superintendent. Dr. Holmen replaces Janene Fogard, who retired in June. Dr. Holmen will oversee Operational Services (Communications, Human Resources and Technology Operations) as well as Students and School Support Services. 
  • Barbara Posthumus has been named Associate Superintendent, Business and Support Services.
  • Mike VanOrden has been named Associate Superintendent, Student Academic Success Services. VanOrden will oversee Teaching and Learning, Special Services and Intervention Services.
  • Dr. Jen Rose has been named Director, Teaching and Learning. Dr. Rose comes from Bellevue School District where she has served as principal at International School since 2010. Dr. Rose replaces Mike VanOrden who is now Associate Superintendent, Student Academic Success Services (see above).
  • Beth Pendergrass has been named Director, Communications and Community Engagement. Pendergrass comes from Rio Rancho Public Schools in Rio Rancho, New Mexico where she served as Public Information Officer. Pendergrass replaces Kathryn Reith who left Lake Washington School District.
