This decision is being made by our district due to our inability to safely operate school as a result of so many staff being absent and the number of unfilled sub positions. This staffing shortage has hampered our ability to respond to the number of positive COVID cases.

Over the last week, both Redmond High School and Central Office staff have gone above and beyond to fill critical uncovered office, classroom and supervisory positions. We are at a point where there are more absences than we can cover which has caused us to make this decision. As I have said, our goal has been to keep our schools open for in-person learning with the knowledge that we may need to close a school. I greatly appreciate your understanding as we navigate the current situation.

Teaching materials will be provided to students asynchronously on Tuesday and Wednesday, January 11th and 12th, while teachers prepare their synchronous/’live’ teaching schedule to begin Thursday, January 13th.

This move will allow us to continue daily instruction while our staff members complete their quarantine requirements. More specific information about what this daily instruction will look like will be provided by your student’s teacher. Classroom Teams support can be accessed here.

Information about accessing meals during this period will be provided on Tuesday.

All extracurricular activities will be canceled for Tuesday 1/11. We will communicate out directly to students participating in extracurriculars about whether we will be able to maintain or postpone activities during this time. All field trips scheduled during the school day will be postponed during this period.

I appreciate your partnership as we navigate this temporary shift to remote learning. You can expect to receive additional information from Principal Vanderveer and your student’s teachers over the next two days.

Sincerely,

Dr. Jon Holmen, Superintendent
Lake Washington School District
