Two LWSD students named as semifinalists in US Presidential Scholars Program

Redmond High School senior Andrew Shi and Eastlake High School senior Amay Bansal have been named as two of the 625 semifinalists in the 2021 U.S. Presidential Scholars Program. These LWSD students are two of only 14 students from Washington state selected. The semifinalists were chosen from nearly 4,500 candidates expected to graduate from U.S. high schools in the year 2021. Although these two students were not selected as finalists, inclusion in the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program, now in its 57th year, is one of the highest honors bestowed upon graduating high school seniors. Five Lake Washington School District students receive National Merit $2500 Scholarships 

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) announced that five Lake Washington School District (LWSD) students will receive National Merit $2500 Scholarships. Fifty-two students were selected statewide for these awards. 

The students receiving National Merit $2500 Scholarships are:

• Isabelle Bodkhe (Redmond), Redmond High School
• Oscar Lo (Redmond), Redmond High School
• Arnav Narula (Redmond), Redmond High School
• Amelie E. Sharples (Redmond), Redmond High School
• Rohan M. Krishnan (Sammamish), Eastlake High School

Reminder: Virtual Registration Week – May 24-28, 2021

New to LWSD? Register your child now for the 2021-22 school year!*
Lake Washington School District plans to provide in-person instruction five days a week, following pre-pandemic school hours for grades K-12 in the 2021-22 school year. 

While you can enroll any time, we are asking families to please enroll early so we can make sure the right staff are in place for fall 2021.

Registration for all K-12 LWSD students is done through our website. Enrolling online is fast and easy! 

• All required documents can be accessed on the website and uploaded securely. 
• Parents/guardians who are unable to upload documents may send them to the school by U.S. mail or contact the school to arrange a safe drop off.

*Currently enrolled students do not need to re-register to continue attendance in LWSD.

Reminder: June 1 snow make-up day: No school 

Reminder, June 1, 2021 is a no school day for student. It was on the calendar as a snow make-up day. However, we did not have any district-wide snow days, so June 1 will be a non-school day.

 

Reminder: LWSD Spring Groups

Lake Washington School District is offering support groups for both students and parents this spring. Students can join virtually on Wednesday afternoons to connect with fellow students for some extra support. Discussions will be about struggles and successes and to get some ideas for how to cope with isolation, the pandemic, lack of motivation, stress and anxiety. Groups will be tailored to student interests based on attendees. 

Parents and guardians will have the opportunity to vent and talk about frustration and worry, as students transition back to in-person learning or whether they remain at home. This drop-in group will provide parents with an opportunity to discuss parenting tips and to share successes and struggles in a supportive environment with other parents. Groups will begin the week of April 26 and end the last week of school.

Reminder: Travel guidance from LWSD 

Throughout this pandemic, we have highlighted the role the community plays in minimizing the spread of the virus. This has been done by a number of measures and includes paying attention to the travel guidance put out by the Center for Disease Control (CDC). If you are traveling for non-essential purposes, we ask that you review the travel guidance and follow the steps outlined. By following this guidance, we can ensure that our schools, classrooms and community are in alignment with health and safety precautions. Thank you for your attention to this guidance.

Reminder: Free internet available to eligible families

Reliable connectivity to the internet is critical for student success during remote teaching and learning. The state recognizes this need and has partnered with Ziply Fiber, Comcast/Xfinity and Presidio to create Washington’s K–12 Internet Access Program, which gives eligible families free internet access so students can connect to online learning from home.

This internet access opportunity will potentially provide families with faster and more reliable connectivity than hotspots, which will better support our students. Eligible families can receive free internet access through June 30, 2021.

LWSD has developed this webpage for families to check eligibility, choose a provider in their area, request an access code and sign-up for service.

 

Sign-Up for a Free Summer Youth ORCA Pass!

High school students can sign-up for a 3-month Summer Youth ORCA Pass from King County Metro. The free transit pass is available for students in 8th – 12th grade who are qualified for Free or Reduced-Price Lunch.  Summer Youth ORCA Pass is good for unlimited rides on local transit including any bus, the Sounder train, Link light rail, streetcar, Water Taxi, and more!

Three LWSD high school students among winners at regional art show

Congratulations to Lasya Kanagala and Lauren Butterworth at Redmond High School and Anna Ignatovich at Lake Washington High School. These three students were among ten honored by Puget Sound Educational Service District in the Regional High School Art Show. The winning entries now advance to the 48th Annual State High School Art Show on May 20. Artwork is judged on creativity, composition and technique.
