American Education Week/Community Leaders Breakfast

LWSD recognized the many community partners, business leaders, elected officials and parent leaders who support the district at its Community Leaders Breakfast on November 14. This annual event is part of American Education Week and seeks to raise awareness of the importance of public education while informing the nation of the accomplishments and needs of public schools. “We all have to do this together. It’s one community in terms of supporting kids,” said Dr. Jane Stavem, Superintendent.

World Language Competency Credit Opportunity

Students may develop world language skills in many ways. They may use another language at home, attend language programs in the community, learn language skills online or spend time living abroad. Students who have achieved some proficiency in a world language may seek to earn credit by taking an assessment that measures their proficiency.

Students who wish to pursue this option must sign up to participate in "Washington World Language Assessment Days." Through this program, students complete an assessment. If they demonstrate at least a novice mid-proficiency level, they receive a certificate of recognition and a letter indicating proficiency levels and number of high school credits earned.

Lake Washington School District will offer three more testing opportunities for 9th-12th grade students in 2018-19. The cost of a first attempt during a student’s high school career is free. Read more information about the LWSD World Language Credit Option and sign up by December 2 at 11:59 p.m. Priority will be given to 11th and 12th graders if space becomes limited. Testing will be held on December 12 at Redmond High School. Students must register by December 2 at 11:59 p.m. on the website.

Are you ready for inclement weather?

When emergency conditions such as snow and ice or windstorms result in school schedule changes, the district will notify families directly through our SchoolMessenger automated phone system. You can learn how to know when school is delayed or cancelled on the School Closures and Late Starts page of the district website. Families with students who ride the bus should watch their mail in mid-November for a postcard with information about their bad weather bus route. Students and staff thank construction workers while placing last steal beam at Margaret Mead Elementary

Students and staff signed the last steel beam at Margaret Mead Elementary before a crane lifted it to the top of its three-floor steel frame on Nov. 13.

Director of Support Services Forrest Miller, who is retiring this month, explained the tradition of placing an American flag and evergreen tree on the beam. “We’re celebrating the fact that there’s been safety on this project, but also honoring the workers,” he said. Superintendent Dr. Jane Stavem also attended the topping out ceremony. She thanked workers and the community for making the project possible.

The new building will have a capacity of 690 students.

Reminder: School Start Time Survey closes November 26

School start and end times changed for the 2018-19 school year as a seven-period schedule was implemented for high school students. The School Start Time Advisory committee will administer two online surveys, one per semester to gather staff and parent feedback on start/dismissal time impacts. The first survey will be open until November 26.

Students explore STEM careers at Google and network through the Kirkland Chamber

Students from Lake Washington High School, Juanita High School, International Community School and Emerson High School toured Google’s Kirkland campus on November 8. They learned about Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) careers from a panel of Google employees. The students then attended a luncheon at the Kirkland Chamber of Commerce. Coming up in the world – Former LWSD student named to Forbes’ 30 Under 30 Education list

A former Redmond High School student is making a name for himself in the education world. Tyler Menezes, class of 2010, has been named to the Forbes 30 Under 30 Education 2019 list.
