The Lake Washington School District (LWSD) Board of Directors has selected Dr. Jane Stavem to be the next Lake Washington School District Superintendent. From an impressive pool of applicants, Dr. Stavem emerged as the top choice to lead the district.
Lake Washington School District has a long-standing commitment to sustainability. Lake Washington is a recognized leader in sustainability practices and education in the region. The district won a 2015 McKinstry Champions of Sustainability award.
District efforts focus on three interconnected goal areas:
- Student Learning
- Professional Learning
- Resource Conservation
Provide sustainability instruction to all students. Students learn through instruction on conservation and natural resources in science, social studies and other areas. Support and encourage school participation in programs, such as King County Green Schools Program and Sustainability Ambassadors.

Professional LearningHelp teachers deepen their knowledge of sustainability instruction and problem-based learning. Support and encourage participation in professional learning through programs and partnerships. Washington Alliance for Better Schools (WABS), Cascade Water Alliance and Sustainability Ambassadors are examples.
Genevieve Menino, a teacher at Juanita High School participated in an
eight day placement with the King County Environmental Health Services
team as part of the WABS STEM externship program.
Resource ConservationProvide a resource and utility management program. Its purpose is to:
- Conserve energy and water
- Reduce waste
- Educate students and staff to save energy
- Use sustainable building and maintenance practices
