More than 4,100 distinguished students recognized nationwide
Redmond, Wash. – The National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) announced this week that one additional Lake Washington School District (LWSD) student will receive a National Merit College-Sponsored Scholarship:
Kevin Zhang, Nikola Tesla STEM High School - National Merit Purdue University Scholarship
A group of freshman from Nikola Tesla STEM High School is helping kids with Cerebral Palsy move around a little easier. As part of their end of year project, this team partnered with a program by the name of Go Baby Go
Dozens of LWSD students earned their way to the 2021 International Career Development Conference (ICDC), which was held virtually in late April and early May. Of that group, about 30 students competed as finalists and two students placed as high as third.
It all started when Shivani Jayaprakasam, rising junior at International Community School (ICS), was on vacation in Japan. A major typhoon struck while there in 2018 and she has been interested in emergency preparedness since.

With these questions in mind, two science classes at Lake Washington High School celebrated the last week of school by setting up lab experiments. The labs also gave students a chance to use the new equipment in two of the school’s 20 new classrooms.
What is the LWSD Teen Startup Challenge?
The LWSD Teen Startup Challenge is designed to promote student startup ideas and venture creation. The challenge provides the opportunity for high school students to win prizes and learn from local business leaders. Finalists will present their ideas and business plans and receive invaluable feedback from successful professionals.
Who can participate?
The challenge is open to high school students in Lake Washington School District.
What are the prizes?
The winning students/teams will be featured at Investor Sharks Northwest, will receive feedback and advice from some of the biggest venture capitalists and angel investors in the Puget Sound Region, and will be awarded prize money from the Kirkland Chamber of Commerce!
All participants will receive recognition and awards!
Finalists advancing to the Investment Round will be notified by Monday October 4, 2021. Finalists will prepare and submit a 10-minute presentation/pitch to Kate Atvars by Monday, October 11. Finalists will receive additional details regarding presentation requirements.
