Lake Washington School District announces changes to middle school athletics for 2024-25

Lake Washington School District (LWSD) is changing its middle school athletic program. Starting in the 2024-25 school year, LWSD will move to a three-season athletic schedule and will double the number of intramural sessions being offered to students.

Here are some of the highlights of this new middle school athletics model:

Informed by our community
The middle school athletics program review committee has been meeting since 2022. Most recently, this group surveyed families of students in grades 4-7 to get their feedback about program options. The feedback received from this survey was reviewed by the committee to help inform decisions about our middle school athletics model for 2024-25 and beyond. These changes are based on valuable input from students and families. LWSD actively sought the opinions of those families that would be directly impacted by a change to ensure that the new model aligns with student needs.

Ensuring student voice
Under the new middle school athletics model, students will have more localized choices for which athletics they want to see offered during each intramural season. Each school will seek student feedback for intramural seasons, ensuring students have a voice in shaping their experiences.

Maximizing facilities and resources
One of the main goals of making this shift in our athletics model is to optimize facility use. Spreading out athletic sessions across the year allows for better practice and competition time. This will reduce bus transportation between schools; saving time and money. These changes address concerns about using Associated Student Body (ASB) funds for athletics. These changes reduce transportation costs funded by ASB and create a more fair distribution of resources.

Fair play and inclusivity
Tryouts will no longer require payment upfront. Students not selected for competitive teams can still participate in non-tryout sports, promoting inclusivity.

Comprehensive approach
LWSD continues to offer the most extensive range of athletic opportunities for middle school students of all our neighboring districts, balancing local context and comprehensive offerings.

Sustainability and fiscal responsibility
The new model creates a more sustainable framework. LWSD is evaluating athletic fees for the 2024-25 school year.

As the 2024-25 school year approaches, LWSD invites families, students and educators to embrace this new era of middle school athletics.
