Redmond, Wash. – On April 30, 2020, Lake Washington School District (LWSD) sold a total of $118.85 million of tax-exempt refunding bonds, which will refinance $134 million of its existing debt, to take advantage of lower market interest rates. The refinancing will save the District’s taxpayers more than $18.6 million over the next nine years.

Redmond, Wash. – The State Board of Education (SBE), the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI), and the Educational Opportunity Gap Oversight and Accountability Committee (EOGOAC) have identified 391 schools statewide to receive recognition. Schools in Washington stand out for closing gaps, showing growth, and demonstrating achievement according to new data released by the state.

    English Learners (ELs)

    Lake Washington School District’s English Learner (EL) program empowers EL students to both participate in classroom curriculum and attain English proficiency through language and academic support from highly-qualified EL teachers. The District provides varying levels of support based on students’ individual needs, language proficiency level, and grade level.

    Eligibility for the EL Program

    All multilingual students registering in Washington state are screened with an English proficiency assessment to determine if English Learner services should be provided. The language proficiency assessment determines a student’s overall ability to communicate and understand English through speaking, listening, reading, and writing. A certified EL teacher or trained proctor will administer the test, which is scheduled when you register your child.

    Services and Delivery Models

    All students who qualify for the EL program are served by EL-endorsed teachers, with the support of EL Instructional Assistants, in their home schools. Types of EL support and services vary by student need and grade level.

    Exited EL Support Services

    Once English Learners achieve the proficient level on the annual English language proficiency assessment, they are exited from EL services and will no longer receive English language instruction from the EL teacher. Exited EL students who perform below standard will continue to receive support from an Exited EL Facilitator for two consecutive years after exiting services to ensure their academic success.

    The Exited EL Facilitator may support these students in a variety of ways. Some examples may include:

    • Tutoring
    • In-class support
    • Before or after school programs
    • Homework support
    • Monitoring of grades and academic performance
