During its July 13 School Board Meeting, Lake Washington School District Superintendent, Dr. Jon Holmen, removed “Rebels” as the Juanita High School mascot. Dr. Matt Livingston, Director of Secondary Education and Juanita High School Principal, Kelly Clapp, will now begin the process outlined in Policy 6970 to select a new mascot.


When schools closed in March, the traditional end-of-year band concerts that showcase a year’s worth of practice and progress were effectively canceled. Rose Hill Middle School (RHMS) Band Instructor, Angela Laulainen got creative during the remote learning period and had her students record their parts at home.

    Planning for 2020-21 Return to School

    School in 2020-21 will be different as we continue to deliver instruction for each student while addressing student, staff and community health and safety during the pandemic. Our planning for the upcoming school year is being informed by guidelines from the Center for Disease Control, King County Health, the Office of Superintendent of Public instruction and other agencies. We are also referring to local, state, national and international models and examples of schooling during the pandemic as we develop our plans. These plans will need to be flexible as we expect there will be ongoing local and regional developments resulting from COVID-19 throughout the year that will require we make adjustments to how we deliver instruction and services for our students and families.

    Return to School Task Force and Workgroups

    Lake Washington School District has established a Return to School Task Force consisting of three workgroups. The workgroup consists of teachers, school administrators, union representatives, parents and central office administrators.

    The Return to School Task Force and workgroups have been tasked with developing flexible plans that:

    • Mitigate and minimize the spread of Coronavirus in accordance with health agency guidance;
    • Keep staff and students safe and support social-emotional well-being and interactions
    • Prioritize inclusive access to learning for each student;
    • Enable staff and students to return to learning in ways that are significantly better than during our closures this year;
    • Support families.

    Guiding Principles

    As we plan for the 2020-21 we are keeping the following guiding principles and commitments at the center of our work. 

    • Protect the health and well-being of students, staff, and families.
    • Proactively address inequities related to race, ability, socio-economic status, and language that have been exacerbated by the pandemic.
    • Educate each student.
    • Ensure active, consistent and meaningful connections with each student.
    • Engage our families.


    The Return to School Task Force has been split into three workgroups to explore different issues.

    Scenario Planning Workgroup

    The Scenario Planning Workgroup is looking at the benefits and challenges of the variety of learning scenarios needed to meet physical distancing, in order to determine which models may be viable options for next school year.

    Instructional Planning Workgroups (Elementary and Secondary)

    The Instructional Planning Workgroups (Elementary and Secondary) are exploring the needs of elementary and secondary education. These groups will determine how to assess the needs of students and how to balance efforts at meeting both the social-emotional needs as well as the academic needs of students at each level.

    The Unique Needs Workgroup is looking at the unique needs of those students and staff members who have been most greatly impacted by the disruption of COVID-19. This workgroup is charged with identifying the student and staff groups who have or will have unique needs that could present a barrier in continued engagement in learning or work.

    The Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction formed a Reopening Washington Schools 2020-21 Workgroup. Their work will support our planning but not all suggestions will be implemented.
