    Acquiring the internship substitute certificate

First, you will need approval via email from three people:

    • Your university supervisor
    • Your cooperating teacher
    • Your principal

Ask each of these individuals to send their approval via email to Bill Rosen at wrosen@lwsd.org. He will initiate a request to OSPI. You will receive an email from OSPI informing you that this has happened and that you must complete an OSPI online application and pay the $44 fee for the limited certificate. This should take no more than about a week to process.

Second, you will need to complete the LWSD online application. Application questions can be directed to Kathy McRae at kmcrae@lwsd.org.

Finally, before you will be allowed to sub for your cooperating teacher, you must view an essential employee expectations video available through the district portal. Once you have viewed it, your principal will answer any questions you may have, and then he or she will email Bill Rosen confirmation that you have seen it. Your Principal will also provide you two booklets: Code of Professional Conduct and Expectations for Employee Conduct.

Once all of this is complete, you will work with Tina Ayer at tayer@lwsd.org to complete the required paperwork for substitute teaching. You’ll be provided information about how to access an online New Employee Orientation at your HR hiring appointment.

See the checklist below for a reminder of steps you need to take before you can substitute for your mentor teacher in the LWSD.

A note about continuing as a regular, certificated substitute after your internship is complete: All required paperwork for intern substituting will have you prepared to shift to regular substituting. However, you will need to wait until your certificate is issued from OSPI to begin subbing. Please be sure to notify HR when your certificate is issued so that we can create your substitute account and you can start working in the district.
