The Board of Directors recognizes that school-related travel is an important factor in the learning process. Out-of-district travel offers opportunity to enrich in-school learning by providing diversity and promoting outside interests of pupil(s). It also provides opportunities for student participation in specific areas of interest and expertise with groups not otherwise available within the immediate confines of the school district.
The superintendent shall develop procedures for the supervision of out-of-district student travel which ensures the safety of the students and recognizes the legal parameters under which the school district must operate. These policies must reflect the board's belief that student out-of-district travel must be directly related to current instructional activities being taught by the sponsoring teacher or be an approved ASB activity or sport. The Board believes that out-of-district travel must contribute to the accomplishment of course objectives, increase students' appreciation, knowledge or skills related to the subject matter and be consistent with the purposes of an approved activity or sport. The trip is valid if experience of comparable value is not locally available.
It is further the policy of the Board that out-of-district travel must be organized in such a way that all students enrolled in the sponsoring class or activity may participate with parental permission without excessive personal financial commitment. Whenever possible, trips should not require students to miss any school time and when it is necessary that school time be used for travel, alternative assignments must be available to students if they choose not to participate. Students participating in trips will be allowed to make up work missed in other classrooms.
