Student Representatives

2026-27 LWSD Student Representatives to the School Board: Humsini Reddy, Elaine Huang, Armaan Chandani, Sarah Samanta (l-r)

The Lake Washington School District Board of Directors recognizes that student voice is an essential component of effective governance. As part of its commitment to meaningful engagement and informed decision-making, the Board established Student Representative positions in 2022 to ensure that student perspectives are intentionally incorporated into Board discussions.
Student Representatives serve as non-voting advisory members of the Board. They contribute directly to Board conversations by sharing insights from students across the district, helping the Board better understand how policies, programs, and decisions affect student experience in practice. In this role, Student Representatives act as a bridge between the Board and student communities. They bring forward student perspectives and help communicate Board work back to schools.

Student Representatives participate in open Board meetings and discussions, review Board materials in preparation for meetings, and engage in ongoing communication with students in their respective regions. They work collaboratively to elevate student voice, identify emerging issues, and support the Board’s understanding of district priorities from a student perspective. While they contribute to discussion, Student Representatives do not vote, make motions, or participate in executive sessions or closed meetings.
High school students are encouraged to apply for these positions during their sophomore year. The Board selects Student Representatives through an application and interview process, typically appointing two incoming juniors to serve two-year terms through the end of their senior year. Representation is balanced across the district, with students selected to represent both the eastern and western regions.
Student Representatives are expected to demonstrate strong communication skills, a commitment to representing diverse student perspectives, and a willingness to engage in civic leadership. They maintain good academic standing, adhere to Board governance expectations, and commit to the responsibilities of preparation, participation, and communication required for the role.
Through the Student Representative program, the Board strengthens its connection to student voice and ensures that governance decisions remain informed by the experiences, perspectives, and needs of students across the district.
