    Superintendent Message - December 2017

    Better Together

    Dr. Traci Pierce, Superintendent

It is hard to believe how fast 2017 has flown by! As the year comes to a close, and we look toward the new year, it is great time to reflect and be grateful.

As author William Arthur Ward wrote,

“Feeling gratitude and not expressing it is like wrapping a present and not giving it.”

As December is the season of giving, it is the perfect time to express our gratitude to our community. As a district, we are grateful to serve wonderfully diverse and creative students. We are grateful to partner with supportive families, PTSA members, community organizations, and city leaders. We are grateful to our community members and voters for supporting our schools and our students.

Last month I was proud to host our third annual Community Leaders breakfast. Part of American Education Week, this event brings together community partners, elected officials, and parent leaders to thank them for partnering with Lake Washington School District. The theme of the event was “Sharing our Story,” and the district’s story is best told through the stories of students. Three students, from John Muir Elementary, Rose Hill Middle, and Redmond High School, shared their stories in a “Day in the Life” video. The district’s technology program, English Learner program, music programs and high academic standards were featured, along with the amazing accomplishments of the students. The students and their family members were also there in person for the event, so attendees enjoyed meeting them as well.

The event also featured beautiful music by the Eastlake High School Chamber Orchestra students and the wonderful songs of Lakeview third graders. Attendees left with caramel apples made by Lake Washington High School Culinary Arts students.

In addition, McAuliffe Elementary students shared a Thank You video, and we want to share it with all of you as well:

On behalf of the Board of Directors and the entire district staff, I extend sincere gratitude and appreciation to all our families and community members. We thank you for all that you have done and continue to do to support our schools and students. We truly are better because of you!
