Lake Washington School District (LWSD) recently reached an agreement with the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) on a new three-year contract.
Teacher Instructional Assistants
Auxiliary personnel shall include but not be limited to the following:
Professional trainees — persons who are authorized to take part in experiences in school or school-related settings as part of a program that leads to professional certification, including holders of preparatory certificates -- teacher, administrator, and educational staff associate; administrative interns as defined in the 1961 certification standards; student teachers and others involved in laboratory programs in the school district.
School aides — classified employees serving primarily in the school in clerical and staff support roles.
Instructional assistants/paraprofessionals — classified employees serving primarily in the classroom in a staff support role including tutors.
Volunteers — persons (adults or students) who assist in the school under supervision and without compensation.
- Aides, assistants, volunteers, and professional trainees should demonstrate and encourage positive attitudes toward one's self and toward others so as to provide a better school life for learners.
- Volunteers shall be selected by the building administrator with the assistance of the professional staff.
- Professional trainees shall be placed in buildings with the agreement of the building administrator who has obtained the advice of the professional staff of that building.
Orientation should be provided professional staff in the supervision and efficient use of auxiliary personnel.
Assignment and Supervision
Instructional assistants, aides, trainees, and volunteers should be assigned according to their qualifications and, where possible, according to their interests. Instructional assistants, aides, trainees and volunteers shall be assigned to the buildings with the agreement of the building administrator who has obtained the advice of the professional building staff requesting auxiliary staff assistance.
The building administrator, with the assistance of the professional staff, should review and evaluate the proficiency of instructional assistants, aides, trainees, and volunteers. The professional staff persons to whom instructional assistants, aides, trainees, and volunteers are assigned have primary responsibility for the supervision and evaluation. If at any time during employment an auxiliary employee's job performance is determined to be unsatisfactory, the immediate supervisor and the building administrator shall initiate procedures according to the negotiated agreement between the bargaining unit and the school district.
