On June 8, Congresswoman Suzan DelBene announced Tesla STEM student, Sophia Xu Ling as winner of the 2020 Congressional Art Competition for Washington’s first congressional district for her watercolor piece titled, “The Suffering of the Great.”
District Attendance Area Transfers
The superintendent shall recommend attendance area configurations to the Board of Directors. Such configurations shall include but not be limited to a socio-economic impact statement relating to the area under consideration. Attendance variances may be approved by the superintendent or designee.
Variances in Attendance
- Open Enrollment
Schools will be designated as opened or closed based on space available prior to the Open Enrollment period. Open schools may have limited space available. Variances are accepted on a space available basis.
Each spring during the pre-determined Open Enrollment period in February, families may apply for a variance request to a different school. Applications for enrollment in a school other than the student's neighborhood school may not be refused except when the school requested has reached its enrollment capacity for the entire school, individual grade level, or classroom. Applications made during the Open Enrollment period will be given first consideration. Applications made after the Open Enrollment period will still be considered; priority for such applications shall follow those made during Open Enrollment.
- Priority order of variance approval
The district has a priority process for accepting variances when an open school / grade level receives more requests than the specific number of available spaces at that school. First priority is given to students with a concurrently enrolled sibling at the requested school. Should requests exceed spaces available, a lottery will be conducted. Should space remain, next priority is given to students who have attended a school which feeds into the requested school (i.e. split-feeder; district program; previously-approved variance). Should requests exceed places available, a lottery will be conducted. Should spaces remain, next priority is given to remaining variance requests. Should requests that remain exceed spaces available, a lottery will be conducted.
No variances will be accepted for the following school year prior to the Open Enrollment period, which begins February 1.
- Staff residing outside of the district attendance boundary
In accordance with RCW 28A.225.270, a district shall permit the children of full-time certificated and classified school employees to enroll at:
- The school to which the employee is assigned;
- A school forming the district's K through 12 continuum which includes the school to which the employee is assigned; or
- A school in the district that provides early intervention services pursuant to RCW 28A.155.065 or preschool services pursuant to RCW 28A.155.070, if the student is eligible for such services.
- Closed school reconsideration
A family may appeal a denial of a variance. Special consideration will be given if a sibling would concurrently attend the requested school.
In all cases where a variance is approved, transportation to and from school becomes the responsibility of the parent or guardian. All requests for variances must have the approval of the parent or guardian.
