    Detention of Students

    File: JGB

A school administrator or teacher may detain a student for disciplinary reasons after school hours, provided the student has been informed of the nature of the offense and / or the specific conduct constituting the violation. The student will be afforded an opportunity to explain or justify his / her actions to the staff member. Detention will not begin until the parent has been notified (except in the case of the adult student) of the basis and reason for the detention and, in the case of students that take the bus, arrangements have been made for the student's transportation home. In cases where transportation is required, 24 hour notice shall be given so that transportation may be arranged.

Parents may be asked to arrange for the transportation of the detained student. However, if the parent cannot or shall not provide it, an alternative disciplinary procedure must be substituted.

Students who are detained after school must never be left alone during their detention. Their supervision must be provided, or arranged for, by the teacher or administrator who detains them.

After school detention on any one full school day is to be limited to 40 minutes. After school detention on any one partial school day is not to exceed the dismissal time of a regular full school day.

Any student, parent, or guardian who is aggrieved by the imposition of a detention shall have the right to an informal conference with the building principal or his or her designee for the purpose of resolving the grievance pursuant to WAC 392-400-240. The discipline action shall continue notwithstanding the implementation of the grievance procedure set forth in this section unless the principal or his or her designee elects to postpone such action.
