Policies

The best interests of the schools and the public shall be served by a well-planned and vital program of communications with school employees, students, parents, and the public at large. 


The board authorizes the superintendent to establish a means of preparing and distributing news releases, bulletins, and other suitable publications. Other forms of communication media such as films, television, and radio may be utilized at the discretion of the superintendent. 


News Media Relations

Unsolicited Radio and Television Coverage


Upon the arrival on the school scene of radio, television, newspaper reporters or photographers, it is the responsibility of any staff member who observes such presence to report this development immediately to his/her supervisor who in turn shall contact the Office of the Superintendent of Schools.


News Releases

Releases to Newspapers: General


Through the facilities and personnel of the office of the superintendent, news and feature releases shall be issued on a regular basis to appropriate daily and weekly newspapers which have readership among the residents of the school district.


Releases to Radio and Television Stations: General


All news or feature story releases to these media, whether they be initiated by the office of the superintendent of schools, by a member of the administrative staff, or the professional staff, shall require the authorization of the superintendent or his/her designee.


News Conference Interviews

Members of the professional staff of the Lake Washington public schools are encouraged to accept as many invitations as is feasible to appear as either speakers, panel members, or interviewees as a vital means of interpreting the educational program of the school district. It is expected that recipients of such invitations should confer with the representative of the superintendent of schools prior to such appearances in order to avail themselves of current policy and updated information about the school district.


Use of Students in Public Information Program

District and School Publications: Notices to Parents


Official notices to parents may be prepared by members of the administrative staff with a copy placed on file in the office of the superintendent.  Such notices shall be limited to school business and to parent-faculty group announcements.  No organization shall be permitted to use the children for the distribution of materials or notices without approval of the superintendent.  The superintendent may distribute notices on school programs, rules, and annual meetings to the student body.  Copies of teachers' letters to parents shall be kept on file by the teacher.


Assigned Public Relations Work by Students

 

Under the appropriate supervision of school district personnel, students, with the permission of their parents, may be involved in public relations activities such as public performances, participation in panel discussions, etc.
