Early Entrance to Kindergarten

Kindergarten Early Entrance Instructions - for children under five years old on August 31

Please read and follow these instructions carefully.

Note: The Early Entrance to Kindergarten application for the 2018-19 school year will be open from January 16, 2018 - June 30, 2018. Late applications are not accepted.

Early Entrance to Kindergarten

General Information

To register for kindergarten, students must be five years old by August 31 of the entrance year. Underage children whose birthdays fall between September 1 and November 30, and whose parents believe to be exceptionally qualified for kindergarten, may apply for early entrance to kindergarten. Children whose fifth birthday falls after November 30 are not eligible to apply for early entrance to kindergarten.

The Early Entrance to Kindergarten application for the 2018-19 school year will be open from January 16, 2018 - June 30, 2018. Late applications are not accepted.

Application Process

To apply during the application period, submit the following to the Early Entrance Office, LWSD Resource Center, P.O. Box 97039, Redmond, WA 98073-9739:

  • Parent Application and Questionnaire
  • Preschool/Daycare Questionnaire (if applicable) completed by your student's child care provider
  • Copy of the student's birth certificate or passport
  • Check for $175* payable to Lake Washington School District or LWSD. Parents who request a fee reduction will also need to complete a free and reduced lunch application.

Students must reside within the Lake Washington School District at the time of application in order to apply for Early Entrance to Kindergarten. Families are required to provide proof of residency as part of the application process.

* This fee may be changed by the Board of Directors.

Application Timeline

The Early Entrance to Kindergarten application for the 2018-19 school year will be open from January 16, 2018 - June 30, 2018. Late applications are not accepted.

Late and incomplete applications are not accepted. Please note that availability of trained staff to administer assessments will be very limited during summer months. Applicants are strongly encouraged to submit their applications as soon as possible.

Kindergarten Early Entrance results are sent to parents within two weeks of the evaluation. If your child qualifies, results are sent to the neighborhood school as well. You will need to notify your neighborhood school within two weeks of your decision regarding early entrance, should your child qualify.
