Lake Washington School District has partnered with Sodexo to provide students with nutritious meal options for more than 35 years. Adding money to a lunch account
There are two ways to add money to a student’s lunch account:
- Charge your Visa or MasterCard online through the secure MySchoolBucks.com site. If you would like step by step instructions for using this secure site, see our online payments page. There is a convenience fee of $1.95 for each transaction.
- Send cash or a check made payable to LWSD to the school office with your child’s name attached.
Parents will receive a SchoolMessenger email when their student’s lunch account is low or negative on funds. Phone calls are made by this system when an account becomes negative $1.00 or more.
If you wish to be taken off the list or would prefer to receive negative balance notifications via email, please call us at 425-936-1393. Please note that we cannot guarantee that your child will receive a whole lunch should their account balance show insufficient funds.
Apply for Free or Reduced-Price Meals
Depending on your family income and size, your student may qualify for free or reduced-price meals. To apply for free or reduced-price meals:
- Please print the application and instructions.

Note: Children of parents who qualify for Basic Food, formerly known as food stamps, are automatically enrolled in the free lunch program. Income limits for this program rose in October 2008 and more families may be eligible. For more information, go to www.foodhelp.wa.gov.
Lake Washington School District Meal Charge Procedure
LWSD’s Nutrition Services Department takes pride in providing nutritious meals to students to support learning each school day. It is the responsibility of parents or guardians to prepay for school meals, provide a meal from home, or complete an annual application establishing eligibility for free or reduced price meals.
Under no circumstance do we want a child to go without a meal during the school day. Students will be allowed to debit their school meal account for the purchase of a complete breakfast or lunch when their account shows insufficient funds or when the student does not have sufficient funds in the form of cash or a check. The purchase of ala carte items including 2nd entrees, milk or juice and snacks are strictly prohibited when an account is negative or will become negative due to the charge.
Adults are not allowed to charge a meal or purchase any ala carte items if they have a negative balance on their account or will become negative due to the charge.
Nutrition Services will make every effort to communicate with families the status of their student’s low and negative meal account balances through the following efforts:
Accounts with low balances of $10 or less:
- Families will receive an automated email message twice a week (Mondays & Wednesdays) regarding their child’s meal account balance.
- Families who utilize MySchoolBucks to manage their child’s account can set alerts that will notify you when an account balance reaches a certain point. This is managed strictly by the parent.
Accounts with negative balances:
- Families will receive an automated phone call and an email message three times a week (Mondays, Wednesdays & Fridays) regarding their child’s meal account balance. Notifications will continue until account balance is paid off.
- Families will receive a personal phone call from the Nutrition Services Office once their child’s balance reaches a negative $15.
- If the child’s account balance continues to remain negative after these attempts, Nutrition Services will contact the school designee who will connect with the families to problem solve ways to resolve the negative balance issue.
- Unresolved negative balances at the end of the year will be submitted to the Accounting office for collection.
We strongly encourage families to complete the School Meal Benefit application annually to determine if they qualify for free or reduced priced meals. The School Meal Benefit application may be completed throughout the school year if a family’s income changes. The School Meal Benefit application is available here.
Families are encouraged to enroll in the online prepayment service www.myschoolbucks.com for meal account payments and account tracking. There is a convenience fee for this payment service, however, there is no fee associated with account balance inquires through MySchoolBucks.
Families should contact Nutrition Services for the following:
- If you do not want your child to purchase a meal once their account is negative or if you want to restrict the purchase of a la carte foods, an alert can be placed on their student’s account.
- If you need assistance with payment options to address school meal charges.
- Questions regarding negative school meal balances.

Special Dietary Requests
If your child has a medical dietary need that requires food to be different or modified, you may request accommodations from the Nutrition Services Department by completing the appropriate Special Dietary Accommodations form.
The form must be completed in its entirety and signed by a state-recognized medical authority who is authorized to write medical prescriptions in the state of Washington. Completed forms must be submitted to the Nutrition Services office at 15130 N.E. 95th St., Redmond 98052. Please do not submit this form to the school nurse or the district office. Doing so will delay the processing of your request.
Each school handles allergies in a different way, depending on their students' needs. If your child has a severe allergy, it is important to communicate your concerns directly with the school.
Nutrition Services uses food products that contain common allergens such as wheat, soy, egg, dairy and fish. These items are not specified on the menu due to product variations. If you have questions about allergens on specific menu items, contact the Nutrition Services office at (425) 936-1393. We are more than happy to work with you to accommodate allergy concerns.
We do offer peanut butter and jelly sandwiches at some sites. Select elementary and high school sites have chosen not to serve those sandwiches in their kitchens to decrease risk of anaphylactic reactions in affected students. Please be aware that this does not guarantee an allergen-free or nut-free school. All elementary sites receive their supplies and food products from middle school base kitchens that do have peanut butter on site. Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches served at the elementary schools are actually made at the middle school sites. They are sent, wrapped in cellophane, to the elementary schools.
Elementary school kitchens should not have peanut butter on site. We do our very best to avoid any cross contamination of peanut butter with any other food products in the middle school kitchen by preparing them last in a separate area of the kitchen and cleaning and sanitizing all utensils and surface areas affected immediately after production.
Keep in mind there are no restrictions on the products other students can bring in their lunches from home. Check with your school for local practices regarding allergens such as the use of nut-free tables in the lunch room.
Many of the items on the LWSD menu can be made without meat. For our purposes, a dish is considered meatless if it contains no animal meat, other than fish. Meatless options on our menu may include eggs, dairy and fish. Meatless options are identified on all daily offerings such as pizza, grill items, salads and sandwiches. Please see the actual menu for more detail. We have at least one meatless option available every day.
Additionally, some main entree items do not contain meat such as a grilled cheese sandwich. Some can be requested without meat such as a pasta bowl. Standard practice and accommodations vary from site to site, so for this reason we do not list meatless options on main entrees even though they may also be available. The Lake Washington School District uses very few pork ingredients in the school lunch menu. Occasionally we do offer items with pork ingredients. We hope this information will help you feel confident in finding and helping your child avoid those items on the menu throughout the year.
Please note: Turkey Ham (which is 100% turkey) is used on all menu items that list ham except for the deli bar ham sandwiches in secondary kitchens, where pork ham is used.
