Every child sees the world differently. Being able to “see” a photograph anywhere and at any time is a learned skill that can open up boundless new ideas and perspectives in our lives. Image making can be an artistic outlet, a technical exploration, a useful skill set in adult life, and just plain fun. Using fun homemade contraptions, your kids will learn the concepts of aperture, shutter speed, depth-of-field and equivalent exposures. Students play with images that capture movement, leading lines, geometric shapes and changes in perspective. They will take pictures inside, outside, close-up, wide angle, down low, up high, with flash, without flash, even using big, old-fashioned, movie lights and equipment. Students explore how imagery affects us every day emotionally, monetarily, and morally (and any other way they can think of).
This class will challenge your child to learn what is traditionally considered college level material, but in a manner suitable to 10 and 11 year olds. Very few 5th and 6th graders will have an opportunity like this and we all know that when kids start early, they can keep a skill or interest for life.
In this weekly 50-minute Wilder PTSA morning enrichment class, camera mechanics and techniques will be taught in depth, including but not limited to:
- Styles of photography
- Composition
- Camera controls
- The basic physics of light
- Artificial and natural lighting concepts
- Misuse of photographs in public venues (internet and text messaging)
Students will take photographs at every class. Time permitting, two in-school “field trips” will occur:
- Studio lighting day
- Exterior natural light day
Students will be asked to bring a camera to class each day if possible, preferably one that has manual settings. Students will have the opportunity to complete optional weekly photographic assignments at home.
Instructor will supply additional cameras for student use and as a teaching tool when possible. Lighting equipment will be brought to school as needed. Students' work may be presented to the school (with permission) at the end of each session, either in print or digital form, details TBD.
Classes are taught by Jason Rothkowitz.
