Excel in this class will be used as a mathematics problem solving tool. Excel is an excellent tool for exploring mathematical ideas. The abacus, Napier’s bones, the slide rule, and the hand held calculator were once “high” tech tools for students, but their time has long past. Undoubtedly, Excel is the most powerful computational tool that ever entered a classroom. However, students probably are not very aware of some of the brilliant capabilities and tasks that Excel can perform. This course will serve to point students to the latest tool of their generation by demonstrating the basic components of spreadsheets, writing algebraic formulas for cells, and exploring some of the wonderful formulas in Excel’s Function Wizard. Ultimately, students will have the basic know how to design Excel spreadsheets for tasks to perform the mathematical calculations of their lives.
