Page Content The Wellness Team at Carl Sandburg Elementary/Discovery Community School in Kirkland Washington is dedicated to promoting good health at school and at home through efforts recognizing that children need nutritious foods and physical activity in order to learn, grow, and thrive*. This is done through fun programs to help students and families learn about making healthy food and fitness choices while focusing on the whole child! There are many benefits of good nutrition and being fit, including being a better student.

Below is a list of the programs developed and promoted by the Wellness Team. Volunteers are needed!! You can take a small part or run the entire program – the time varies by what you would like to do. Consider any of them, or come up with one of your own that you are passionate about. Encourage fellow parents to join the Wellness Team for a great year!

* Guidance in these efforts may be taken from the National Alliance for Nutrition and Activity (NANA). NANA created a set of model policies after the U.S. Congress passed the Child Nutrition and WIC Reauthorization Act of 2004 (this Act requires school receiving federal funding for lunch programs to establish Wellness Policies). NANA's model policies were developed by more than 50 health, physical activity, nutrition and education professionals from a variety of national and state organizations. Step It Up in May for Bike/Walk/Bus to School MonthWelcome to Walk, Bike and Bus to School Month! This is a great opportunity to get to school in a fun way in May! Many principles for this program are incorporated from Safe Routes to School and Cascade Bicycle Club in order to keep students safe on their way to/from school by encouraging taking the bus, walking, biking or carpooling to decrease the number of cars around our school community and to increase safety, health, air quality, community-building, fitness, traffic relief, and environmental awareness. * An opportunity to teach safe cycling skills. Pedestrian SafetyDrivers, parents and kids can all do their part to help keep our streets safe for child pedestrians. Bike Rider ContractThis is the school's bike rider contract for students in grades 4-6 who wish to ride their bikes to school. October is International Walk to School Month!Join kids and families around the globe to walk, bike and bus to school in October with a kick-off celebration October 5th! This month-long event is designed to keep students safe on their way to/from school by encouraging taking the bus, walking, biking or carpooling to decrease the number of cars around our school community and to increase safety, health, air quality, community-building, fitness, traffic relief, and environmental awareness.
Fruits and VegetablesHere you will find information and recipes for the healthy, whole foods that have been offered as free samples during lunch twice a year for four years provided by LWSD Food Services. This program requires many volunteers and often provides a first-time taste to students of whole foods they may have never tried including cabbage, spinish, jicama, bell pepper, couscous salad and much more!!
Fitness Fun - Spring BreakFitness Fun is a great reminder for kids and families to stay active before, during and after school Breaks. To participate, just turn in the completed Fitness Fun sheet by the first Friday after break to your teacher or the office indicating how you kept moving during break.
Brent Holm's BioRecess Fun

Snack AttackThis fun class was conducted by Bastyr nutrition graduate students with PTSA grant funds to teach basic nutrition education and introductory cooking skills using small kitchen appliances to create healthy and delicious snacks. This brocure contains basic information and recipes that was presented during the class.
